I am tracing my genealogy and from remarks of a great aunt some time ago, our family came from May.  I know from my research and a family history that was published in Pennsylvania that cites our family was from Queens County and came to the US in about the 1840's.  I was surprised to see that Mayo was a parish in Queens county and know desire to find out if this was the area the Delaney's emmigrated from.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Doonane and Mayo is an RC parish in southeast Co. Laois where Laois borders Co. Kilkenny and Co. Carlow. I looked on Roots Ireland which has records for the parish of Doonane back to 1814 for baptisms and 1815 for marriages and found an 1822 baptismal record for a Martin Delaney with father Laz and mother Margaret Brennan. I don't have access to the parish register back to 1822 but likely Laz is Lawrence. The mother is shown as Margaret not Mary but I think this record is a good lead for your family.  This family was living in Crettyard townland in Killabban civil parish which is serviced by Doonane and Mayo RC parish. Unfortunately, the parish register for Doonane available online goes back to 1843 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0715  even though Roots Ireland found records back to 1814. I can't explain why I was not able to find the other baptismal records or a marriage record.

Here is a link to the present day church of Doonane and Mayo  https://www.kandle.ie/parishes/doonane/

Let me know what questions you have.

You can add the story of the family to our XO Chronicles site  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

  • Thanks for the information.  I am planning a trip to Ireland.  Are there places that I should vist to see and obtain this record and others that may not have been retrievable online.  This has been a mystery to me for many years.

Some good news. I did find the Martin Delaney/Mary Brennan marriage record in the Doonane RC parish in 1844. Roots Ireland showed Clonbrock as the location for Mary but when I checked the actual parish register (see link below) it is not clear if Clonbrock townland applied to Mary or Martin or both. I then located a transcription for a April 27th 1845 baptismal record for an Anne Delany with parents Martin Delaney and Mary Brennan. So the couple left Ireland sometime after this event. The location for Martin and Mary was Clonbrock which is a townland in Killabban civil parish not far from the Co. Carlow border.

Are you headed to Ireland this year?

  • Roger,

Thank you for the information.  Yes, i am planning to be in Ireland.  There seems to be some confusion with the material attached to my message.

Lawrence Delaney married Mary Brennan and had 5 children between about 1822 and 1831 - Martin, Matthew, Patrick, Margaret and Mary.

Mary Brennan died at ses on her way to the United Stated in about 1843.

Martin Delaney returned to Ireland in the 1870's for a vist.

Lawrence Delaney returned to Ireland after the death of his wife.

I plan to go over my material shortly to see if other information is hidden somewhere.  I appreciat any information you can provide to solve this mystery.

    Tom Delaney

I guess the mistake was mine. Got Martin and Lawrence confused.

I researched Roots Ireland and the only baptismal record with a father whose name starts with LA and mother with surname Brennan is the one for Martin in my first response. I also searched father LA and mother Mary and did not see records for the children you listed. By the way, Roots Ireland has the Doonane baptismal records back to 1814 so if they were baptized in that parish, the records should have been displayed when I searched. Probably they were baptized in a different parish which no longer has records back to the 1820s.
