Hi,

I am trying to trace my husbands family.

The story is that his Grt gandfather, Charles (Garret) Dempsey was born in 1860 in Canada to a Charles Dempsey and Bridget Corkeran (Corcoran) who immigrated due to the potato famine. I have been looking for anything to do with these people and have found nothing, bit like a needle in a haystack with those names I think.

Supposedly Charles (jnr) became a seaman and jumped ship when it arrived at Port Melbourne in Australia. I do not know if this is true.

I do not know where the name Garret came from as it is not on his marrige certificate but is on his headstone. Way back then I do not think too many people had 2nd christian names however it may have meant something to him as he gave that name as a 2nd name to one of his sons.

In recent days I found a scrap of paper written by an uncle and again do not know if any truth in it that his grandfather Charles's family was from Kings County.

Any help is very much appreciated.

  • Oh forgot to add that Charles (Garret) was born in 1860 so the parents would have left Ireland before that.

  • An Irish acquaintance put me on to IrelandXO and your message.
We are currently researching a Charlotte Dempsey, who with he husband Robert Johnston and their family emigrated to Toronto around 1851.
They came from central Ireland and the family likely had some connection to Lord Darby of the Leap Castle Estates as well as Aghancon.
I am in the process of doing a fairly extensive historical narrative about this family in that they are ancestors of my wife Mary.
We are interested in anything you might have, and I would be very pleased to send to you whatever we have thus far.
Our best wishes for the season,

  • hello my name is samantha i am currently doning my family tree.

my grandfather was a dempsey form aghancon they rented the land before 1922 of lord darby of leap castle .

i am assuminig that they purchased the land in 1922 as the house and land is still in the family.

if they moved out of ireland before 1851 im guessing that this (charlotte dempsey)  father was george dempsey or a sibling of. and george dempsey wife was ann shaw..

  • Hello tickford, I am not sure if any of you are still active on this page but here goes: Charles/Bridget Dempsey also had a son named James Dempsey of which I am a direct descendant of. I have never heard of the name “Charles” for Mr. Dempsey, he was always called Garrett which is where his son’s middle name would have came from.

“Charles” Dempsey came from County Waterford or County Wexford in Ireland and married Bridgett Corcoran in Burin, Newfoundland. I am not aware of any other children born to this marriage.

I look forward to a possible response.
