I am seeking to complete the family trees of Robert Hugh Richardson Mathews (1831 - 1874) and his wife Hannah Bond Lindsay (1834 - 1902). Married 22 September 1859 in Derry.

Hannah was almost? blind and when Robert died quite young she migrated to Australia with her children. There are records in Australia for the death of Gertrude (my grandmother who married HaroldBell), Emelie and (aunty Rabie - don't know real name) but I believe there were other children.

I would like to know if there are records of the birth of all their children. I am also particularly interested in finding the ancestors of Hannah Bond Lindsay.

I understand the parents of Robert were Rev. Robert Mathews (1792 - 1878 and Elizabeth Catherine Humphries (1796 - ?)

Any help in building and varifying this branch of my family tree would be appreciated. Also why my parents included Beresford in my name. Unfortunately it is now too late to ask them.

  • The marriage between Robert Mathews and Hannah Lindsay was registered in Londonderry in 1859 Vol 7, page 262. If you order a copy of that certificate you should get both fathers names, their occupations, townlands and other information which may help you trace back.

What looks to be Robert?s death was registered in Edenderry 1874 Volume 13, page 345. Estimated year of birth is 1816 (which differs slightly from your information).

You can order a photocopy from GRO Roscommon for ?4 per certificate. Put the place, quarter (if there is one given), year, volume & page number on the application form (anywhere). http://www.groireland.ie/ You have to post or fax the form to them but they will e-mail the copy certificate to you if you wish. Put ?please e-mail to?..? clearly on the top of the form.

Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church (assuming the couple attended different churches) so that may be the place to look for the bride?s baptism and that of any siblings. Unless it was a registry office marriage, the church will be on the certificate.

The abstract of Robert?s will is on-line.

Probate granted 6th Aug 1874. Robert Hugh Richardson Mathews late of Edenderry, Kings County, manager of the Ulster Bank, deceased, who died 10 July 1874 at the same place was proved at the principal registry by oath of Hannah Mathews of same place, the widow and sole executrix.

The will itself may have been destroyed in the 1922 fire but perhaps it survived. You can check with the National Archives.

Statutory birth registration didn?t start in Ireland till 1.1.1864 so you won?t get birth certificates for any children born before that. You might get their baptisms if you know their denomination and which church they attended. (If they were Church of Ireland then you may need to check with the church or the RCB library in Dublin to see what records exists for Edenderry). The rootsireland site has 8 children born to this couple in Edenderry Churhch of Ireland. None earlier than 1863. (Perhaps they only moved to Edenderry in 1863?). Rootsireland is pay to view.

There?s a birth for Gertrude Lindsay Mathews registered in Edenderry 1867, Vol 13, page 512. That looks promising.

Other Mathews births registered in Edenderry at that time are as follows. I cannot say who the parents were. (You need to buy the certs to find out). Some look as though they may be for the same family:

Rebekah Boland Mathews 1869 Vol 18, page 511.

    Edith Mathews 1866 Vol 8, page 580

Emily Kathleen Mathews 1872 Vol 3, page 587

Norah Roberts Mathews 1865 Vol 8, page 604

    Helen Mathews 1873 Vol 13, page 493

Charles Lindsay Mathews 1864 Vol 3, page 500.

Helen listed above looks to have died young. There is a death in 1873 Vol 13, page 325, aged 0.

    Cathleen Adilede H Mathews died 1871, aged 8. Vol,8, page 359.

I wonder if your ?Rabie? could be Rebekah?

Re the Rev Robert Mathews, the one that most likely fits your information was in Bantry Apr ? Jun 1878 Vol 5, page 20, est year of birth 1791. If he was a Church of Ireland Minister, you may be able to get some details of his life from Crockfords Clerical Directory or from Lambeth Palace.

Can?t see a will listed for Rev Mathews.
