I saw your recent posting in the latest e mail and wondered if you have further information on the Dillane family near Listowel.

My maternal great grandmother was always a bit of a mystery to me, firstly recorded as Dillane/Dillon but only having a record of a mother. Her name was Margaret Dillane b 1847 and she married William Stack b 1842 in 1875. There's little information about the many Dillane/Dillons in the area so your posting of this name interested me. Any tricks to find this elusive family?

  • Dear Ken:

Thank you for your post to the message  board  I assume that you are referring to an earlier post or an Ancestor profile about this family,

I noted a civil marriage record for Margaret Dillon who married William Stack on 30 January 1875 in Listowel.  She was noted as having resided at Knockanasy and her father's name was John Dillon.  I also noted that the two witnesses to this marriage were both Dillons:  Johanna and John.

It might be possible to trace these individuals forward in the 1901 and 1911 Census records.

I do see a baptism record for a Margaret Dillane to a father John Dillane and mother Mary Stack in Listowel.

The above is on the Church Records Section of the Irish genealogy website.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello both Ken and Jane,

I too am very keen to find out more about my Dillane/Dillon ancestors from Listowel.  I know a lot about the family up until the Listowel connection.  Long and short, my great-grandfather Patrick Dillon is documented as being born in Listowel and later relocating to Tralee then England where he was involved in horse-racing with his seven sons who I know about.

Listowel is a mystery though.  I know that Patricks father was John Dillon/Dillane.  I have a baptismal record which I believe could be Patricks and states his mother was Margaret MacMahon.  They must have been quite the talk of the town because the record for the baptism of their eldest child Margaret states that she was illegitimate .  Patrick was born on 1st March 1857 but before that is a blank.  I cannot find anything about John.  I would love to know if I still have relations in the area and whether John was from Listowel too.  We are hoping to make a trip to the west for my 60th this year so would like to tie it in with a tour of Listowel and some fact hunting.
