  • Hi there,

I was able to source a Record of Death for Hugh Doherty in 1902 from the Irishgenealogy.ie Website. I attached it here for anyone interested. The location is given as Ballyheerin, his son Hugh is present and registered the death. It records his father Hugh senior as being 66 old (1836) which is similar to what was given in the 1901 Census.

    1901 Census - Fanad_West - Ballyheerin

Unfortunately, this throws up its own problems because 1847 would be the first year that Baptismal Records for Catholics started to be recorded within the Parish and so there will be no record available to view from back in 1836. for Hugh's birth and the names of the parents be for him at the time.

I believe that it must have been common local knowledge that Hugh Doherty senior had come from Glenvar and this information was passed down through the years and it is this that added into the article.  www.irelandxo.com - Ballyheerin National School, Fanad (Link to page) . The reason I say this, is Hugh Doherty which I presume to be the same person is recorded as having land and a house in Ballyheerin as far back as 1858, which is over 60 years before the 1901 census was even taken and some 150 years back from where we are today I attached it below. I will look into this query further.

P.S I don't suppose you have a Birth record to share here for Hugh Doherty junior or was his birth year taken from the Census. Also, I am slightly curious to find out whom I might be helping

  • I think when i was researching the Dohertys from Ballyheerin I came across another Hugh Doherty family in Umnicam which is just neighbouring Muinagh. I will have to recheck but hat sounds like the family you have.
I seen alot of people researching your family on ancesty, all impressive trees. I like that you and the brother are doing it together, sounds like the best way and more enjoyment.
I will have look tomorrow evening and back as soon as possible, thank!
