Hello

I am Nancy Mann from Houston, Texas in the US, and I would love to find out that I have relatives in Ireland.  Via a Valuation of Tenements, some Roots Ireland records, and a whopping big probate case here in the US this is what I believe to be factual.  Terrence Dolan and Mary O'Hara are my 3rd great grandparents.  Their son John married Mary McPartland before coming over to the US.  Her father was Thomas McPartland.  I thought her mother was Bridget Cassidy, but someone at the Leitrim Genealogy Center didn't believe I had found the correct baptismal record.  Mary's siblings were Bridget, Honora, Patrick and Rose McPartland.  Patrick and Rose never married.  Patrick came to the US but Rose did not.  Bridget married Bartholomew Clancy and had at least the children Patrick, Thomas and Mary.  They stayed in Ireland.  Honora married Bryan Meehan, and they did come to the US.  John and Mary's first child, Patrick Dolan, my great grandfather, was born in Ireland in 1857.  They came to the US in 1860.

Some names of interest to me on the Valuation of Tenements are as follows.  Owen O'Hara must some how be related to Mary O'Hara.  I got the name Mary O'Hara off of John Dolan's death record in the US.  I got his father's name off of this same record.  Owen was also a witness listed on John and Mary's marriage record that an Irish genalogist pulled for me.  Another witness to their marriage was Francis McLoughlin, and he is also on this Valuation of Tenements.  A relative perhaps?  Or just a family friend?  I don't know.  What a mystery!  In addition to Bartholomew Clancy being on this Valutaion of Tenements so are Clancys Hugh, Patrick, Boyce, Owen and James.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

If you have not done so already, you may want to search the free site  www.irishgenealogy.ie   Images of civil records are available which may assist you with your family. Below are links to the 1901 and 1911 censuses for Loughros townland. You will see some of your family names and Bartholomew Clancy is in the 1901 census. There is also a James O'Hara household and I included a link to his 1892 civil marriage record to Margaret Dermott. James' father was Owen O'Hara.

Can't help you with current possible relatives in the area. Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Please consider adding your ancestor stories to our XO Chronicles site.

  • Thank you Roger!  I will use these sites to see what else I can figure out.  Based on what you've written I am now thinking that Owen might have been Mary's brother, not father.  I have sent my DNA to both 23&Me and Ancestry.com.  Thanks again!

  • Hi Nancy,

I am related to the O'Haras from Lougross Glenfarne and would be happy to share any information if helpful. Also, keep in mind that names were often anglicized for records. For instance, Owen was often Eugene.. and believe Terrance was often Edward.

    Regards,

    Brendan

  • Thanks Brendan!  Interesting point about Owen/Eugene!  On a land record, Owen is used, but on a marriage record as a witness Eugene is used.  Do you have your DNA on Ancestry or 23&Me?  I really think I've found about all I am going to find on my Leitrim relatives.  Irish research is not easy!
