In doing some research in the 1910 U.S. Census, I was looking at my great-grandparents listing there.  Their names were Edward Donnellon and Bridget Murray Donnellon.  As I've posted elsewhere they emigrated in 1880 coming to Cincinnati, Ohio.  We also know that ultimate Bridget's sisters Sarah and Maggie both emigrated too, although I don't know exactly one.  We also know that there was one more sister Mary Ann who married a McGill.  As I understand it, she emigrated too, but then returned to Dunmore.

In the 1910 Census, along with my great-grandparents and their children, it listed an Edward J. Redington and listed his relationship as "brother-in-law."  I have contacted two folks who have worked on their genealogy who are each descended from Sarah and Maggie and Redington is not a name either of them married.

That leads me to the possibility that this Redington was married to a sister of my great-grandfather, but I have no idea about who his siblings were.  The census shows he was born in Ireland, but it doesn't say where.

If I read your note correctly, you do not know where Edward Donnellon came from in Ireland.

I found a civil marriage index record for a marriage between an Edward Donnellan and a Bridget Murry in the last quarter of 1878. The marriage was registered in the Roscommon registration district. The record is below. You can ignore the John Grennon name. His marriage was recorded on the same page as Edward and Bridget.

If you get a copy of the marriage record, it will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they were living at the time of the marriage. To get a copy of the record, contact the GRO www.groireland.ie  fill out their form and provide the quarter/year of marriage, registration district and the volume and page number ( 3 and 298). Costs around 4 euros.

  • I'm sorry, Roger, I know the details for Edward and Bridget - they come from Dunmore, although I think she was originally from Tuam.  It's just that this is the first I've come across this "brother-in-law" and the name Redington.  I've spoken to three folks who do genealogy in our lines and none had heard of that name.  I know that Bridge Murray Donnellon had three sisters and the Redington name doesn't come up in their lines, at least not contemporary with them.  What I'm wondering is whether this Edward Redington was married to a sister of my great grandfather, Edward Donnellon.  But I don't know what siblings he had.

Edward and Bridget married around 1879 and then emigrated to the United States in 1880.  They've left an enormous brood of hundreds of folks since.

    Thanks for your response.

P.S. Thanks for the info you did send.  I'll review that a bit further too.

If you know the names of the parents of Edward Donnellan, another option is to check the RC church records for Dunmore parish. The Mormon Church has microfilmed the baptismal records from1833-1860 for that church. There was a gap from 1861-1876. I don't know what year Edward was born and how old Edward Redington was but possibly some siblings of Edward Donnellan were born in the 1850s and are on the film.

www.familysearch.org to order the film online and have it sent to a local Mormon Family History Center.

  • I wanted to post an update to my earlier thread.  I believe that this man's name was actually John Reddington.  He was widowed and married my great-grandfather's sister Anne Donnellon, born in Dunmore in 1856.  His burial records show his parents as John Reddington and Catherine Burke.  The 1900 US Census show as having been married two years and that Anne had no children.  No children lived with them in 1900, so I don't know if he had children from his first marriage.  Unfortunately I neglected to note his first wife's name, although I found her obituary in our local paper.  Now it's proving ellusive again.  Again, just wanted to update this.
