I am searching for any information on James Eland married at St. Luke's Parish in 1840 to Emma Davis, he died in 1851 at the age of 48 in Dublin. Looking to find where he was born and if his family originated in Ireland or if they moved from England?

  • Unfortunately the marriage record includes only basic details to work with, other than the names of the bride & groom, just names of two witnesses and date of the marriage, no addresses other than "of this parish", occupations or father's names.

The only Eland entry listed in Dublin city in Pettigrew and Oulton's 1840 Directory is a James Eland, with an address at 5 Lennox Street, no occupation is noted for him.

I dont see any Elands in the 1834 listing.

  • Thanks Shane,

When I clicked on the link to Pettigrew and Oulton's I see the name Mr. Francis Eland? I wonder if that could be his father?

  • the directory entry is for a Francis Eland, dont know why I typed James. Given how rare the surname seems to be in Dublin at that time it certainly seems likely that Francis is related in some way to your James, I think maybe a brother going by the following  ...

I found a probable marriage for that Francis in St. Mark's Church of Ireland parish in 1836 to Charlotte Minchin and baptisms in St. Peters CofI of their children George in 1838 and Charlotte in 1840 and William in 1850 (residence given as Lennox St. for the last 2)

The earliest mention of the surname that I see in the Dublin city records on IrishGenealogy is an Ellen Elland who was a godparent at a Catholic baptism in 1823

  • Thanks Shane,

I agree possibly a brother but Francis's path in life certainly was different, I see he was an accountant and in death listed as esquire. I have found that James was a leather tanner, living at New Row I guess in the heart of textiles.  Maybe they are not related.

    I appreciate your efforts greatly.
