hi my name is cathie and as my mum has just died i wanted to find out more about her family who i hope she is now with, she loved her nan, catherine cunningham who was born in ballymacoda ,she was baptized on 6/11/1878 at ladysbridge, she married stephen pilcher who was the chief head coastguard at youghal, but they moved round alot, mainly cork, waterford and kerry, but i know my nan used to talk of donygaul too...i was on a site where it found gravestones in the cemetery on the hill and there was a grave for 2 brothers john and william cunningham who both drownd, on the 28/8/1887,catherine had to boy cousins who both drowned together and i was wondering if these 2 were her cousins,i have also found ut on another sight that her parents were called patrick cunningham and margaret ahern...there was also talk that my greatnan had spanish blood,i was wondering if this is true, catherine also went by the name kate, she is down as kate pilcher on the 1901 and 1911 census s,she had 2 older sisters who had left home when she was still quite young,i would like to find out about them....catherine had 7 children, but only my nan had any children.....when stephen pilcher died in 1918 they moved to liverpool as the houses they had lived in went with the job,but they were looked after by the navy,my uncle william was sent to greenwich naval college, the 3 daughters clara, maud and kathleen all went on to become nurses,my nan kathleen was very clever and passed to go to university, but her mum never told her she had passed she found out years later,i think it had something to do with her dad dying,,as she would have been 15 when he died...well i ll leave it there for now,i dont want much do i lol,any info would be most welcome........thanx all.....cathie x

  • hi thanks for replying,i have posted on the youghal page too,as i know my greatnan lived there as a married woman,at least i think she was married,a man on a website called where s merriel (they do one free search for you) said that there is no record of her ever marrying stephen pilcher,i find this hard to believe as my whole family, especially in the past were strick catholics...but at the same time my mum said that catherine did nt speak to her family and had totally lost touch with them by the time she moved to liverpool, she was only 19 or 20 when she had her first child, and he said that under the age of 21 you needed your parents consent, maybe they would nt give it,stephen was 14 or 15 years older than her, maybe thats why she stopped speaking to them, though at the same time, you d have thought they would rather her be married than not if she was having a baby.

on roots ireland i found out that she was christened at ladysbridge on the 6 th nov 1878 to a patrick cunningham and margaret ahern,(i found this out through her saying she was born in ballymacoda on the 1901 census, she also says she was married, would it be legal to say this if you were not ??)...there are no other catherine cunninghams born in ballymacoda since forever except that one,so am i to assume that this is deffinately her ? it fits in with her age on the 1901 census, she says she is 23 on that.

also on that site i found out that patrick and margaret had 2 other children an ellen and a mary, ellen born in the same place as catherine and mary born in moord, clashmore, one was a year older and the other 3 years younger,im sure my mum said she had older sisters, but it may have made it easier for her if she said they were older so people would ask less questions about why she did nt keep in touch, they are the only 3 children down anywhere to patrick cunningham and margaret ahern, but again is this enough evidence to conclude its her family, patrick and margaret were married at ladysbridge on the 24 th feb 1876.

with there not being many census to look up its a bit muddy,i found a patrick and margaret cunningham living in waterford on the 1901 cencus,it says he was born in sligo, she in mayo, them being 56 and 54,but again is this the same 2,the ages mean that they would nt have had children till they were 30,was that usual in those days ??

also i know my nan used to mention going to gonegal as a child, there are quite a few patrick and margaret cunninghams who are burried there,i think he about 1905 or 1907 and she 1914,donegal is quite a way from cork, waterford, clare and kerry all places my nan lived with her dad being a coast guard, but if she had grandparents living there then it would make sense,(her father never served in donegal as a coastguard,i have his service records)....also there are dog licence records for a mary cunningham her age being 19 to 23 in donegal

one last thing i also found a mary and an ellen cunningham leaving ireland for new york from londonderry on the 16 th sep 1900,it says they re sisters, but it has them down as both 23,well the older would have been that age sailing on the furnessia, this could be why i cant find them on the 1901 census in ireland,oh,questions, questions,i wish i had the answers lol.

well i hope this has been a bit clearer than my first essay was, thanks for taking an interest, cathie x

    Festive Greetings Cathie,

Yes, there are 2 Cunningham brothers who have their resting place in The Hill Cemetery here in Ballymacoda.  John & William who were both drowned locally. Their sister Norah died the previous year in 1886. I have contacted a member of the family who still live locally and will be in touch.

We have 5 local cemeteries with all their headstone inscriptions uploaded onto www.historicgraves.ie website.

    • The Hill Cemetery
    • Kilcredan Cemetery
    • Ightermurragh Cemetery
    • Bohillane Cemetery
    • Garryvoe Cemetery

    Good luck with your research

  • hi i hope you dont mind me mithering you again,

i have sinse found out that as well as the catherine cunningham baptised nov 1878 ladysbridge child of patrick and margaret (ahern) cunningham, married ladysbridge feb 1876 ..................that the william and john cunningham who both drowned together 1887,buried in the hill top cemetary also had a sister called catherine who was born in ladysbridge baptised 1876,now as i said i already knew about the 2 boys drowning because my nan and mum had told me about it,im sure they said they were her cousins, but maybe they could have been her brothers ?

their dad was martin cunningham, which would either mean that he was also my catherines dad or her uncle, meaning that he and patrick would have been brothers if patrick is her dad ?

it says on the headstone that martin is from monagoul,is there any way to find out about sibblings online for irish people, without census s this is very hard :(

     martin was married to a margaret kenefick,married 31/1/1856 at ladysbridge,they had 10 children,being

     1\margaret born 1857

2\ michael born 1858,who may have become a priest

3\hannah born 1860 ,she was probably the nora also on the headstone with the browned boys as that would have made her 26/27 when she died

     4\mary born 1862

     5\james born 1863

     6\ellen born 1865

    7\patrick born 1867

     8\john born 1869 (drownd)

    9\william born 1870 (drownd)

10\ catherine born 1876 .............all at ladysbridge

the only thing thats bothering me is that on the 1901 census catherine (going by the name kate then) says she is 23,well if shes the catherine above then she would have been 25,i know its only 2 years but would you really not know your true age when that young,i can understand loosing a few years once you got to 30 something ? i know age did nt matter as much then because people did nt have all the forms n stuff that we do now to fill in and no pensions etc

as i ve already said earlier my mum always gave the impression to me that she had much older sibblings, some having left home before catherine would have remembered them living at home, but no one ever mentioned her having any brothers just older sisters....... but as i ve said my mum said she never said much about her family,so that could be why, also i dont know if back in those days brothers n sisters were that close ??

i know my nan catherine grew up on a farm and that she was a clever woman for the day,she was a midwife and a tailoress,i dont know when she became them whether before or after she had her own children that being 22 if she is the catherine from above

i ll leave it there,i know you said there was still family of the above in ballymacoda who you would ask to get in touch, but that was over a year ago and no one has, again if there is anyone you could pass this on to i would be most grateful

i came over to ireland in the summer,i went to st marys ladysbridge but there was no one about, its a beautiful little church, but i tried to cover clare, kerry, cork and waterford in 5 days, what was i thinking,i did manage it but had no idea just how far they all where from each other,im going to come back and just consentrate on cork and waterford next time lol
