I am attempting to find infomation regarding my grandmother's family who were listed in the 1911 Census as being residents of a house 13 in Moor (Ardagh West, Longford).  At that time my Great Grandfather was the head of the house, Arthur Webb and listed as a surveyor 2nd Coyoral RC with wife Florence Ada and their 8 children.  Any infomation regarding the whereabouts of the house, what school they may have attended, or any other snippets would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your assistance with this.

Kind Regards

  • Hi Teana,

Our volunteer, Roger, has come back with the following:

I've looked at the census and I think it is likely that this man was involved in updating the Ordnance Survey maps. The family moved around a lot and he was in the Royal Engineers who were engaged in this work. Their house was in the village and I will make enquiries about its location and get back to you.

  • Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it.  I am doing this for my mother's cousins who are intending to travel to Ireland in the very near future and are looking for information regarding their mother who was listed as a babe in the 1911 Census.  They are planning to hopefully travel to the village to see where she lived and where the siblings went to school and try to ascertain some of the other information of their "travels" due to their grandfather's occupation.  I really am thankful a site like this exists to assist the families who are searching, so thank you once again.

  • Hi Teana,

Roger has come back with some photographs for you-he is really great! Unfortunatley, they are too large to attach here. If you will forward your email address to me at ecarty@irelandxo.com I will send them to you.

He has also said that Brian Friel's play 'Translations' has two characters in it that were involved in the ordnance survey and may be of interest to you.

    Hoping to hear from you,

    Emma
