Hello to all from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA

I am looking for information regarding Elizabeth Goodman born circa 1859 in the Ballbay, County Monaghan area. I believe she may have lived in Cornahoe area as well. Her mother's name was Mary McGurk. I believe her father was Patrick Goodman, a farmer in that region. I believe Elizabeth had a brother named Patrick and a sister named Margaret but I cannot connect Elizabeth to Patrick, Sr. and Mary McGurk.

I would appreciate any assistance on this matter.

Thank you all.

Be safe. Be well.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC parish for your ancestors was Tullycorbet (Ballybay). Unfortunately, the baptismal records for this parish start in April 1862 and marriages in May 1862 so no record for Elizabeth would be available. I searched on the subcription site Roots Ireland and did find a baptismal record for a Philip Goodman in 1862 (see below) and Margaret in 1864 and Patrick in 1866. Since civil registration started in 1864, I located the civil birth record for Margaret  (third record on page) https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1864/03608/2331323.pdf  and the 1866 record for Patrick (second record on page)  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1866/03545/2305066.pdf  The townland was Cornahoe in Tullycorbet civil parish.

I did not find a marriage record.

Did the family stay in Ireland or emigrate? I did not see them in Cornahoe in the 1901 census.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Roger,

Thanks for getting back to me.

It makes sense there are no records of Elizabeth Goodman if baptism records were not kept until after her birth circa 1859. I was not aware of that fact. Thanks for that information.

I know of the other Goodmans you list here. I was hoping to connect Elizabeth with Patrick and Mary based on the following:

According to the US census of 1900, Elizabeth was born August 1859 and emigrated to New York circa 1874. Elizabeth is married to William Skelly, with 4  children by this time. Her mother, Mary, is listed as living with her in the New York City region based on that 1900 census. It lists Mary as William's Mother-in-law. It has her listed as Widowed, born in December 1832 with 4 living chidren (appears she lost 5 other children as it states she had 9 children with 4 living children). It then says she came to the US in 1868 and here for 32 years. The census does not list Mary as Naturalized. It appears Mary came to the US before Elizabeth. I can only assume her other children came at about the same time. I do not know why Elizabeth did not come with Mary.

Here is my dilemma. In the 1910 US census, Patrick Goodman is listed as living with Elizabeth Goodman and her husband William Skelly with their 5 children. Patrick is listed as age 78. It lists his relationship as Grand Uncle, marriage Status as Single, and blank for the number of living children and coming to USA in 1855 (although the online census document I downloaded is not clearly written as the writer of the document made a mistake and re-wrote the year over what is listed below the handwriting.) He had been Naturalized by 1910.

I am not sure what to make of this inconsistent information. I can only guess that "Patrick" may not Elizabeth's father since it appears he may have came to the US in 1855, prior to her birth. However, his birth year (circa 1832) would be consistent with her father's age and not the age of a "Grand Uncle" since he is only 28 years older than Elizabeth or is there something I am missing in earlier family names and relationships.

According to Griffith's ask about Ireland web site, Patrick was a farmer in the Cornahoe area renting from Emily Leslie. I had always understood Elizabeth Goodman came from the Ballybay, Monaghan area.

I would appreciate any light on this matter you can provide.

    Thank you for reaching out.

    Be safe. Be well.

So I just discovered that there is a Cornahoe townland in Tullycorbet civil parish and another in Ballybay civil parish. The two parishes border with Tullycorbet to the north of Ballybay. The RC parish for the area covers both civil parishes. So I think the Cornahoe of interest to you is in Ballybay civil parish which ties to the 1860/1861 Griffiths record for Patrick Goodman. (Sorry for the confusion).

Regarding Patrick Goodman in the 1910 US Census, the only explanation that makes sense to me is that he was an uncle to Patrick the father of Elizabeth and others. Which explains the annotation of grand-uncle on the census record (he was a grand-uncle to Elizabeth). He may have been the youngest brother of the father of Patrick Goodman (father of Elizabeth).

I looked for death records for Patrick Goodman in Ireland. Civil registration started in 1864. There is a free Irish government site which has birth, marriage and death records. The site is www.irishgenealogy.ie  For death records 1864-1877, we currently only have index records and from 1878-1969, you can get the actual record. There is only one Patrick Goodman record in the correct registration district but it is not your ancestor sine the record was in 1864 (the person was 40) and we know your Patrick fathered a child in 1866. Likely your Patrick died in Ireland pre-1864 and there is no record available.

  • Hi All, My name is Craig Goodman and my Great-grandfather James, also born in this parish in the mid 1860's, had parents called Patrick Goodman and Bridget Malone. He emigrated to Dundee, Scotland, marrying there Margaret  Duffy[also from Ballybay] in 1890. I know that he had 2 sisters who both emigrated to the US and ended up in the Boston area, Margaret and Bridget but there may have been more siblings. There are apparently still people of the surname Goodman still living in the same area. I have been unable to trace back any further than this due to difficulties understanding the parish/townland scenario and understanding what records there in latin/poor handwriting. Margaret Duffy was the daughter of James, a farmer and Catherine McGroder or McGroider or McGrother. I beleive that her sister also emigrated to Dundee but in the 1901 Census,a Duffy was recorded in a farm address where Mary Ellen Goodman was staying, as grand-daughter. It all peters out unfortunately
