Hello folks -

I’ve recently found information that a Great Grant-Aunt was sentenced to 6 months at Grangegorman Prison and possibly transported but I can’t read the name of where she may have been transported.  Does anyone know where I could research transportation records for 1884 from this area to see where she may have gone?

Thanks!

  • Hi MGilchrist

I understand that transportation had been replaced by other types of sentence by the late nineteenth century, although I could be wrong, so I would expect that your ancestor would have served her sentence in Ireland and perhaps then decided to emigrate.  I know that the petty sessions court records are available on Ancestry.com as I've discovered some of my own ancestors in these records for various things like not having a dog licence or drunk and disorderly behaviour in a public place!  I believe the records are quite extensive for Dublin so you might be able to find your ancestor in Grangegorman.

Someone more experienced might be able to provide better assistance.

    Best of luck,

  • Hi, Is it possible to post the record here?

Also, what was your relative's name, age, etc.?

    Thank you.
