Callaghan Halloran and Mary S. Higgins were married  1 NOV 1814 in Killavullen RC church. I only  know that Mary's mother was Molly Swain.   Neither of them show up in the church registers.

Their children born in the area were:

1. Mary Halloran born about 1817, she married a Timothy O'Connell in Anakissy Parish in 1837 and in 1838 they were living in Cooldoricha townland when their child John was born and baptized in Killavullen RC church

2. Ellen Halloran, born about 1818, married Cornelius Donovan  Aug 1849 in Killavullen RC,
mmigrated 1852 to New York City. May have lived in New Orleans after that, but she died 1865 and is buried in NYC.

3. Elizabeth Halloran, baptized 18 May 1822 in Killavullen RC, her family resided in Annakissy Townland at the time. I do not know what happened to her.

4. Patrick Halloran, baptized May 29, 1823 in Killavullen, RC. The family lived in Grandy Townland at the time. I do not know what became of him.

5. Amelia Halloran, born 1821, She immigrated to New York City.  Married there to James Mansfield in 1854. She died there in 1914.

6. Eileen Halloran, baptized 1 April 1826 in Killavullen RC, I do not know anything more about her.

7. William Halloran, baptized 22 Feb 1829 in Killavullen RC. At the time the family lived Cooldoricha Townland. I do not know more about him.

8. Margaret Halloran, baptized 28 Feb 1830 in Killavullen RC, the family was living in Cooldoricha townland at the time. She immigrated to NYC in 1852.  In 1855 resided with the family of Cornelius and Ellen Donovan.

9. John Halloran, born about 1832. immigrated to NYC, he married there before 1860 to Mary Tarsan.
He died 1876 in NYC

10. Elizabeth Halloran, baptized 5 Nov 1835 in Killavullen Rc, The family was living in Cooldoricha townland at the time.  She immigrated to NYC - then to San Francisco, CA - she married William M Baker in 1865 in San Francisco and then William Kenkle in 1874 in Vancouver. She died in 1901 in Massachusetts.

Many members of this family are buried in Calvary Cemetery in Queens, NY.  John Halloran's grave had the following inscription on the stone.
Tombstone inscription Calvary Cemetery reads....
"Erected by Mary Bullins...In memory of
JOHN HALLONAN, native of Mallow, County Cork, Ireland
died Dec 8, 1876 aged 44 years
also his children - Frank died March 1863 aged 18 months
Johnnie died Feb 1863 aged 2 years 2 months
His mother.... MARY HALLANON  died March 21, 1861
His sister... Ellen Donavan  died Dec 16, 1867
His nephew.... John Connell  died June 11, 1879
Michael Bullins died Aug 29, 1893  58 years
Also.. the above MARY BULLINS died July 12, 1904 aged 70 years.
Requiescant in Pace.......M.E.Kelly" (monument co I think)

His sister Amelia Halloran (Mansfield) is buried right next to John.

I do not know why the name was spelled HALLONAN on the cemetery stone. It is a puzzle. The spelling was HALLORAN in the church records that I rec'd from the Mallow Heritage Center.

I would be happy to hear from any of the descendants of this family.

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message and for sharing this information-you have done a great job on your family history! I hope that someone who knows of this family makes a connection with you.

With regards to the spelling Hallonan on the headstone, is it possible that they changed the name when they went over to the US? Have you looked for any record of them in census records etc. to see what surname was used? It was not uncommon for the names of Irish immigrants to change after their immigration.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello,

I just found this entry.  Elizabeth Halloran (entry above, baptized 1835) was my great-great grandmother.  I have memories of talking to her daughter (my great-grandmother) Marie (Maimi) Kenkle, born in Ft Vancouver, Washington Territories.  Her father was a sergeant in the Army and was later stationed in Ft Coer d'Alane Idaho, when fighting Chief Joseph.  I have lots of info for them and their descendants, but not much for her ancestry.  Have you found anything more about her parents.  I do think that I have seen that her father sometimes went by "Calhoun".

  • Callaghan HALLORAN and Mary S. HIGGINS are my ancestors, too!  Their oldest daughter, my 3xG grandmother, Mary married Timothy O'CONNELL on 17 Apr 1837 in Killavullen RC Parish. As far as I have been able to determine, they only had one child, a son John W. O'CONNELL, my GG grandfather, born 24 Feb 1838 in Cooldurragha, Clenor, County Cork.

John emigrated to New York City sometime in the early- to mid-1850s. My earliest record of him in the US is his Army enlistment in New York on 9 Nov 1855. He served in various locations during the US Civil War and was captured and imprisioned by the Confederates in Pensacola, Florida from May 21-October 15, 1862. At some point he returned to New York, where, on 15 Jan 1865, he married my GG grandmother Ellen whose surname is probably CALLAGHAN but could be SULLIVAN. Her parents may be Thomas CALLAGHAN and Ellen LYNCH. She was born 17 March 1939 in Ireland and died 22 Oct 1907 in Providence, Rhode Island. She is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Washington, DC, with her two unmarried sons, William John and Thomas J. Her two daughters, Mary and Emma, were buried elsewhere with their husbands. Emma is my G grandmother who married Christian W. BÖHNING.

John O'CONNELL died of injuries or disease he contracted in the US Army on 11 Jun 1879 at Washington Barracks, DC.  He was buried in his Uncle John HALLORAN's plot in Calvary Cemetery in Queens, NY. (See the late and wonderful Terry Dewhurst's note above.)

I am interested in connecting with any descendants of Callaghan HALLORAN and Mary S. HIGGINS. I'd love to share information as well as get to know my Irish cousins.
