I am looking for information about my great-grandfather Patrick James Haren.  He was born on 21 June 1850 in County Waterford. I don't know the parish. His parents were Michael Haren and Mary Dumphy or Dunphy.  Patrick and his parents came to the US shortly after his birth, between 1851 and 1853.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Patricia, thank you for the information!  Im so happy to know from where some of my family came!
Patrick's baptism is one year after the birth date I have for him.  Would you know if that was the norm in the Church at that time? I wondering if the birth date is accurate.

also, would Church records go back as far as mid-1820s?  Michael Hearn was born December 1827. I don't know his parent's names. Mary Dunphy was born May 1830 to Jan Dunphy and Mary Bolger.  She had brothers Patrick (1830) and Michael (1838).

thanks so much for the information already given

The date of birth being off by a year is very common. Records vary widely in spellings, ages, etc.

  • I am visiting Ireland in May after too long an absence.  My hope this trip is to visit locales where my ancestors lived before they departed for the United States.
The two records referenced in this thread are from Portlaw, Co Waterford.  My great-grandfather Patrick James Hearn baptized 22June 1851. And his parents Michael Hearn and Mary Dunphy married 5 October 1849. They left Ireland within a year of Patrick's baptism.
Is it possible to say in which church these events took place? If so, is the church still in existence?  I would be love to visit it.

Also, is there any way to know where people lived within Portlaw at tha time?

Thank you for any information anyone can provide.
