Since my last trip to Ireland in 2017 I have located my family link to Ireland. I posted a letter to the editor in the Tipperary Star hoping to connect with my Irish family members. As luck would have it...I received only one reply from Marie Heffernan Shortt in Thurles county Tipperary by mail. She had just finished her family history and was kind enough to email me a copy. After reading through it I recognized many surnames from my own research. After emailing back and forth we learned our link was her great great great grandfather, Patrick, and my great great great grandfather, Timothy, were brothers.I am now planning my second trip to Ireland on May 5-19, 2019  I hope to meet my irish family and see the old homestead in Thurles. I have read posts where Ireland reaching out helps vistors from USA connect with each other. I would very much like your help in doing this.

  • Hi Lassie.

In your 2017 message, I think you said they were from Rossmore. Parish.

I have found  five Heffernans in Glenough Lower in Griffiths Valuation.

    www.askaboutireland.ie.

    In lots  52, 53, 54 and 55.

I know there are headstones to them in Clogher Graveyard.

Will look up those Headstones along with The 1901 census.

Do you think those people might be your ancestors.

  • Yes my 3x's great grandmother, Catherine Dwyer Heffernan , DOB: May 1794 Rossmore,Co.Tipperary was from Rossmore. DOD: 14 Oct. 1869. She married Timothy Heffernan 7 Feb. 1815 in Clonoulty/Rossmore Parish . Timothy DOB:1790 in Glenough Co Tipperary     DOD: ?            I do not know where they are buried or when Timothy died or his parents names                                       They had  nine children. I have their baptisms and marriage certificate which I was able to get on my last trip to Ireland. I also obtained Catherine's death certificate from Ireland which states she lived in Ardevelane at the time of her death age 85(1869) Her occupation was listed as farmer. She was widowed as well which means Timothy had already died.

  • Hi again Lassie.   I found some Headstone ins for old Graveyard in Clonoulty, which are now on line

at Tipperary Studies Digitisatiom Project.  Headstone No,s 29, 33, and 34.

You say  Catherine  died in Ardevelane, which is near Tipperary Town.

Have you looked up The Census for Heffernans in Ardevellane , or Glenough where your Dwyers appear to be from.

    www.census.nationalarchives.ie

In your post 2013, which I answered  you mention one of The Heffernans married a lady called Aherne/Ahearn.

My GGGM was Ahearn from this area.

Hi Christina, Thank You for the information.  Yes my Great grandfather, John Patrick Heffernan (1854-1930) married Mary Anne A'Hearn (1862-1908)  Her parents were William and Mary A'Hearn born in Ireland. They had eleven children one of which was my grandafther, Frank Dennis Heffernan. They lived in Onondaga County New York

I checked the headstones #48b is the one for my contact, fourth cousin, in Ireland great great great grandparents . I have received an email from her after advising her of my trip dates she is going to gather my heffernan's together May 15  for a meet and greet at a local pub near her (thurles )       She will take us to the heffernan homestead which is still standing    I'm so looking forward to seeing them.
