Hi

I have just joined this site so I thought I would introduce myself.

I am Jimmy Cooney aged 47 and live in Walsall, England.  I have 4 sons carrying on the Cooney name,  Nathan (20), Jacob (18), William (8) and Henry (5).

My father was called Jerry Cooney (I think he anglicised it from Diarmuid) born in 1935 and lived in Carrigaline in the building where the current post office is / was.  It wasn't a post office back then.  He came to Birmingham, England in the 1950's.  His father was called Michael James and I think his Mother's name was Helen but I am not sure.  Her surname may have been Riordan or O'Shea but I can't remember.  He also had an older brother called William.

Sadly Dad passed away 10 years ago and he never passed much on about his family.  He was an accomplished piano accordian player and and excellant toolmaker/ toolsetter and mechanic.

I would love to know if any of the older generation remember the family and whether or not there are cousins or other reasonably close relatives.  Any anecdotes, good or bad would be welcome as I have so little information.

Thanks

Jim

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thanks for your query.

I think your best course of action would be to check the 1911 Census for mention of your Cooney ancestors. As your father was born in 1935, his father may be recorded on that Census. As we do not know what age your grandfather was when your father was born it is difficult to say. If you can ascertain this and the location of the family, you will be able to consider whether other occurrences of the name are related to your Cooney ancestor:

I will pass your query to a local contact and hopefully they will be able to uncover some more, recent information about your father?s family.

Best of luck with your search
