I am searching for ancestors of a Kehoe family from County Wexford. I have found a marriage record for Martinus (Martin) Kehoe and Maria (Mary) Coleton for a marriage date of Feb 6 1833 in Horsewood, Wexford, Ireland. In addition, I have located baptismal records for two of their children. Jacobus Kehoe baptized Jul 20 1834 and Maria Kehoe baptized May 14 1838. Both records show baptismal place as Suttons, Wexford, Ireland (Parish Variants Ballykelly, Horeswood; Diocese Ferns). The parents on these two baptism records are listed as Martinus Kehoe and Maria Culloton. I believe Jacobus (James) Kehoe is my great grandfather, because his marriage record shows his parents were Martin Kehoe and Mary Colloton. His death record also shows Mary Collotin as his mother.  James immigrated to Ontario Canada and married Mary Ward there in 1859. They had 12 children and immigrated to Detroit Michigan around 1880. One of their children is my maternal grandfather (Thomas Kehoe) (my mother’s father). I have done extensive US research on the family and have a well sourced family tree on ancestry.com. Currently I am in the process of researching Griffith’s Valuation records for the family in and around the Catholic Parish of Suttons (Horeswood). I would appreciate any help and suggestions for my Ireland research.

  • I see the baptisms you mention July 1834 and May 1838  both Suttons Catholic Parish (Suttons and Horeswood / Ballykelly, Horeswood), I did not see any additonal children. At the time this Catholic parish covered a number of civil parishes, or parts of - namely :

Ballybrazil    Shelburne    Wexford   (Civil parish, barony)
    Killesk        Shelburne
    Kilmokea    Shelburne
Oldross        Bantry    (shared with  Cushintown parish - Ferns)
St. James & Dunbrody    Shelburne    (shared with linked : Hook parish - Ferns)
    Whitechurch    Bantry
    Whitechurch    Shelburne

(Griffith's Primary Valuation is based on civil parishes)

No sign of a Martin Kehoe/Keogh or similar that I see i these listed in these parishes - possibly he was deceased or had moved elsewhere by the time of Griffith's Primary Valuation (1858 for this area). There are two  possible matches for Mary if she was widowed and still alive : Rochestown townland, Oldross civil parish & Oldcourt townland Whitechurch civil parish..

The Suttons RC register includes some death/burials but has a large gap between 1836 and 1858 - includes about 40 Colloton/Coloton/Culleton/Culliton death burials over the available dates.

Tracing Mary jnr. forward, assuming she remained in Suttons, could be difficult due to the lack of detail in early records - e.g. marriages before  the start of civil records do not usually include father's namek, so difficult to prove any Mary Kehoe marriage located is in fact the correct family, she may also have moved away from the parish, or even emigrated... One other factor to bear in mind is that the surname Kehoe has a number of variants primarily - Keogh

p.s. Was the topic on this same family from the 19th of August deleted - I was looking into it ?

  • Hi Shanew147,

Thank you so much for responding to my message board post on Ireland XO Reaching out. Yes I did delete my first post and added the current one. Still getting to learn this website.

I appreciate your suggestions. I will check Mary Kehoe in those townlands you mentioned.

In the mean time I searched Griffiths for Kehoe Households and found 23 in 10 civil parishes. Only 3 were somewhat close and none in the civil parishes you mentioned. I will go back do a search for Keogh households.

Do you think searching in Kilkenny might produce some results?

    Thanks again for your help.

  • Karen- my name is Mark Kehoe and I live just north of Detroit. I believe Jacobus Kehoe is my great-great grandfather, with my great-grandfather being (his son) William Malachy Kehoe. His son Harold Kehoe is my grandfather. I would love to connect to learn more about the family history. We are tentatively planning a trip to Ireland next summer :)
