I had the place of birth form 3rd great grandparents as County Donegal, Ireland. In the 1871 Scotland Census it reads "Donegal Rae". What does that mean? FamilySearch won't recognize that as a place. Should I leave it as County Donegal?

Thank you for your help.

  • There are 3 townlands in Donegal called Ray. Could be one of those. If you want to post an image of the Scottish census we might be able to help. Likewise what was the family surname, and we can check to see if the name is found in any of those Rays.
