  • The online parish records for Killedan parish in Mayo go back to 1834 for marriages, but only to 1861 for baptisms, so there won;t be formal birth or baptismal records prior to then (the civil birth records did not start until the 1860's either).

I looked at the page you mentioned, and the marriage on 9 March 1862 was between Martin (Martinus) Higgins and Margaret (Margarita) Carolan.   The witnesses are Thomas (probably Tadhg) Carroll and Hugo (probably Aodh) Forde (a common surname in the area - you can see more Forde's on the facing page).  The Latinized forms of the names were created by the parish priest, and are not the names which the people actually used, although some of them eventually "stuck".

Interestingly, I think my great-great-grandfather, Tadhg (Thadeus) Gallagher, is shown as a witness on the facing page, at the marriage of one of my other Gallagher relatives.

  • Hello Ann D
I have Patrick Higgins marrying Mary Duffy in Kilmovee RC Church in May 1828. One of the witnesses was Patrick Carroll.
I think Mary Duffy may have been from Cloonamna or Magheraboy.
Patrick Higgins was my gg grandfather.
His son James Higgins who married Bridget Griffin in 1857 was my g grandfather and was living in Uggool, Kilmovee in 1901.

  • Ann, I have a total of 26 cM of match with you, with two segments which are each at least 7 cM in length.

Patricia, I also have a total of 26 cM of match with you, but with a longest segment of only 4.6 cM.

Not a huge amount of match, but it's actually more than the two of you share with one another.  Not surprising that we have some match, since one of my grandfathers grew up in Killedan parish.

My kit number at GEDMATCH is T780556.

  • The amount of DNA we share indicates a connection somewhere further back than we are likely to find in the available paper trail.  Many of the families in the area have been there for a very long time (several centuries at least, and even 1,000 years or more in some cases), so it's almost inevitable that we would be related, and we probably share several common ancestors.  If you end up locating any relatives in or near Killedan named Gallagher, King, Curraby/Creaby,. McNicoholas, Gill, or Campbell, then we might be able to figure ouut a connection.  Another branch of my family living nearby includes surnames such as McNulty, McDonnell, McAndrew, Loftus, Mulroy, and O'Neill.

  • Hello Kevin

You say in your previous message that you have a 26cm DNA match to me.

I have checked Gedmatch but I can't find you.

I have also checked Ann's but can't find her as a match to me either..

Do you have a tree on Ancestry.

    Regards
