William Holley/Holly/Hally and his wife, Nancy (Anne) Carey/Carew, arrived in Sydney, Australia, on the Helen on 21 July 1841, with children Richard (17), Catherine (16), John (13), Juliet (12), Margaret (10), Patrick (9), Thomas (6), Michael (4), and Honora/Nora (9 months).

William was described as 38, a native of Golden, Tipperary, son of Richard, a farmer (dead), and Margaret Quinney/Cooney living there. Nancy was 35, a native of Kilfeacle, Tipperary, daughter of Walter Carey/Carew, a farmer, & Judy Welch/Walsh, both living there. William Holley died in Sydney on 18 February 1884, said to be aged 93. He was probably born around 1795, and reduced his age on immigration to qualify for the Bounty Scheme. Nancy died 0n 11 July 1892, said to be 98, so she was also probably born around 1795.

The only extant Irish records I've been able to confirm for the family are three baptisms, in the Golden and Kilfeacle register:

  • In 1836, Thomas Hally was born to William Hally and Anne Carew, and baptised on 8 March that year. Sponsors (godparents) were Denis Ryan and Honora Ryan and the family was living in Springmount, a substantial estate owned by the White family, slightly to the north-west of the village of Golden.
  • In 1838, Michael Hally was born (baptised 27 August, with sponsors John Carew and Margaret Ryan); the family is recorded as living in Golden itself.
  • And in 1840, Honora Hally was born (baptised 29 November, with sponsors Jas Ryan and Julianne Walsh); the family was living in Golden-land.

The surname Ryan is prominent as sponsors for these Hally baptisms. More recently, DNA links have been found that hint at a strong family connection with Tipperary Ryans who emigrated to Australia and North America.  Any help on pinning down this connection would be wonderful!!

  • It’s possible the couple did not lie on their immigration records. If Nancy was 35 in 1841, then she was born c1806. At her death, she didn't provide the age--someone else did, and they could have been mistaken.
The following Walter Carew, born 1782, could be Nancy's father. I have not checked out the location of Killenaule Parish in relation to your family’s places.

The witness John Carew was likely a brother of Nancy Carew. Here are transcriptions of birth records for two children born 17 years apart to a John Carew and Margaret Ryan, one in Kilcommon and one in Upperchurch

  • Thank you so much,Patricia, for your comments and for the baptism details! I will certainly follow up on those records - it's encouraging to have the Ryan name pop up.and to have a John Carew in the mix as well.

    Thanks again, and best wishes

  • PS I've just looked on the map and Killenaule is about 21 km east of Golden and about 26 km from Kilfeacle.

Does anyone know how ow likely it is that families mixed and moved around between parishes at that sort of range in 18th and 19th century Ireland?

    Many thanks

  • BarbM.  You may want to consider joining our Hally Family History group on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/hallygenealogy

One of our members is currently researching the Hallys from Kilfeacle.

  • Michael Hally 1830-1901 died USA wife Ellen Kiely 1837-1918 died USA.  They had children in Kilfeacle, Tipperary and lived there until ~1869.  Michael had a brother Luke Hally that returned to Kilfeacle and bought a farm died there 1903.  Mother of Ellen Kiely was Johanna Ryan

  • Thank you both very much for that information, Jon and D Hawley, it's very interesting. I'm not a great Facebook user, but I will try joining the Hally group..

From the records there seem to be several Hally families in the Golden/Kilfeacle area in the 1830s, including my ancestors, William Hally and Anne Carey/Carew. It's going back one more generation that has been difficult for me.

    Thanks again, Barb
