Anyone able to work out the names of these two townlands? One seems to be Gortamullan; they may not be in the Parish of Tomregan.

Thanks

The Parish of Tomregan covers areas in counties Fermanagh and Cavan.

The bride's residence looks like Gortmullan to me, which is a townland in the Fermanagh portion of the parish (Marriages usually took place in the bride's parish).

Not able to see  much of the groom's residence at the moment - other than it ends in ..gh  and includes an i.

i've attached a slightly enhanced version of the record as a jpeg image.

EDIT : what's the groom's name ?  worked it out from the index - John Ross & Margaret Lunny Bawnboy reg. district.
there might be a clue to the townland he or his father lived on Griffith's
(he could live outside the parish so makes the search a little more difficult...)

  • Thanks for that; now realise that Parish is in both Counties Cavan and Fermanagh and that John Ross probably lived at Ummera; I think the Minister added "agh" so looks like Ummeragh. Would you know if the gravestones in the Church at Bsallyconnell have ever been transcribed? I did visit it once and it is very historic!

  • David Ross’s wife Isabella died 27.12.1881, aged 76. She was a widow. Informant was John Ross of Umera.

Birth of Edward Ross to John Ross and Margery Lunney on 7.4.1886 at Ummera:

Ummera is in Co. Fermanagh. Griffiths Valuation for 1862 lists Isabella Ross on plot 8a which was a 14 acre farm.  Today that farm is on the Temore Rd. David evidently died before 1862.  This is that Ross household in 1901:

Probate abstracts taken from the PRONI wills site:

Ross Mary Jane of Umera Derrylin county Fermanagh married woman died 21 January 1944 Probate Londonderry 21 April to John Wallace and William Arthur Lunny farmer. Effects £108 6s. 10d.

Ross, Edward of Ummera Derrylin county Fermanagh farmer died 22 February 1961 Probate Londonderry 8 June to James C. Brady solicitor. Effects £209 10s.

The wills themselves should be in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast, in paper format.
