Hello
My name is Susan (Carroll) Gauci and i have been researching my ancestors for some years now. I have recently had a breakthrough and found that my GGG Grandmother Mary (Pinner) wrote Ballylooby as where she lived. Her husband was James Carroll (farm laborer) they were Catholic and had 7 children. I do not know most of the children's names. I know there were James, Edward, Mary and Jane. Unfortunately James was caught stealing a sheep and was sent to Australia in 1827 on the Eliza 3.
Mary and the girls Mary and Jane came to Australia on the Mexborough in 1841 (steerage).

I was wondering how far back the records back in Ballylooby and if there would be and birth/death/marriage/baptism certificates to be found for my family? Or if any of the children stayed in Ireland? ANY information would be great.

Regards Sue

  • Thank You for your prompt reply and link, Yes Pinner is a hard one, her sons death certificates and the shipping record that i found was the only other place that i have ever seen it. I had hoped that would make her records easier to find, but it always comes up with a blank. Regards Sue

  • I had a look a RootsIreland index for Pinner baptisms, and surprisingly their search suggests there are quite a few results, but looking closer at these and it appears that their system is picking up what it considers variants that dont look correct to me -  Pyne, Poynton etc. I did spot two genuine Pinner baptisms, both North East Cork, which couild fit with the sole Pinner entry on Griffith's valuation - James Pinner near Fermoy.

  • Hi Susan

My ancestors also came from Ballylooby (GRIFFIN and GRIFFITH).

The Ballylooby bmd records start in 1828, so your best bet is to study the Tithe Applotment Books carefully. http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

These list all tenants who were liable for tithe payments. This area was covered around 1824-26, but some of the additions in different handwriting were made ten years later. Search using the civil parish, not the RC parish. There was three of these within Ballylooby: Whitechurch, Tullaghorton and Tubbrid (this being the larger and more important of the three).

I found Carroll families in Whitechurch (John Carroll in Tincurry townland and Daniel in Scartnaglorane) and Tubbrid (Michael in Bohernanane, John, Thomas and Darby in Kilcoran, Mary in Cranna, John in Burges New). Ignore the reference to a James Carroll in Tubbrid townland, this is wrongly indexed to another county.

There was one James Carroll baptized in Ballylooby in 1831, who might be a nephew of your own James. His parents were John Carroll and Helen Condon (note: James is latinized as Jacob in the parish register). The sponsors were Jacob (i.e. James) Sullivan and Judith Lonergan.

He could be a son of one of the John Carrolls of Kilcoran, Tincurry or Burges New. The nearest Condon familes were not in Ballylooby, but in Shanrahan parish, further to the West, so that suggests that these are the right townlands to begin searching (all three being fairly close to Shanrahan).

I would put my money on Kilcoran. If The James (1831) is the son of John Carroll of Kilcoran, then one of the other tenants there (Thomas or Darby) could be the father of your James.

Have you checked the nespaper archives for a sheep-stealing Carroll? http://www.irishnewsarchive.com/. It's worth investing 10 Euro for  24-hour access.

    Keep digging, digger!
