I am trying to determine who were the mothers of my great aunt, Margaret Egan, and great uncle, James Bracken. They were married on August 12, 1876 in Castlebar, Mayo. According to the civil marriage record, James Bracken's father was Denis Bracken and Margaret Egan's father was Bernard Egan - born in June of 1834 in Ballyduff as the fifth child (and third son) of Bernard Egan and Anne Tynan.

Hopefully, with that information we might be able to trace both lineages further back, but if anyone already has trees that includes their families, sharing them would be awesome!

  • Hi Kevin,

I'm wondering if this record from www.rootsireland.ie/ might be your James:

    Name:James BrackenDate of Birth:20-Aug-1854
    Date of Baptism:Not RecordedAddress:
    Parish/District:TullamoreGender:
    CountyCo. Offaly
    Denomination:
    Father:Denis BrackenMother:Margaret No_rec

This is the only marriage of a Denis Bracken to a Margaret before 1854 from any county:

    Date of Marriage:27-Feb-1840
    Parish / District:BIRR
    County:Co. Offaly
    Husband
    WifeName:DenisBrackin
    MargaretScully

No luck with Margaret Egan I'm afraid

  • Thanks for looking.

I stuck your data into my tree on Ancestry.com. Sometimes their software will grow the tree and suggest new/additional clues just by doing that. In this case, however, it did not. While I suppose it is still possible, my guess is that this particular Dennis Bracken and his wife, Margaret Scully, were not my James Bracken's parents.

The good news is that in the interim I have made contact with Niall Bracken, who is a living relative in this Bracken tree and who also has done extensive family lineage work. He is preparing a tree for me which may answer my question. If so, I will be sure to post any updates here! ; )
