I am looking for any information regarding James F Gallagher/Gallaher, born in 1826/1827.  I don't know much about him personally, except that he was born in Ireland.  The surname is listed on the 1880 US Census as "Gallaher" but to my knowledge our name has always been "Gallagher" so this may have been a spelling error by the Census taker.  I have not found any naturalization documents or other paperwork to confirm the proper spelling..

Here is the information I have if it helps:

HIs wife's name was Martha McCrakan (spelling varies) Gallagher. She was born in May 1829 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. And based on the birth of his oldest two children, I believe he met and married her there and then lived there for a period of time.

He is found in the 1880 census living in California, Pennsylvania, USA.

His two eldest children (Mary A. and John) were born in Scotland and the remaining sons (James F Jr, Edward and Joseph) were born in Pennsylvania, USA.  As a result this puts the move to America between 1854 and 1866.

I know this isn't much information, but if someone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

  • There?s a record of James Gallacher marrying Martha McCracken in Paisley (St Mirin?s parish) on 17.2.1852. You can get the details from the Scotlandspeople site (pay to view).

Probably also worth checking the 1851 Scottish census for Paisley to see if James is listed there. (That's on the Scotlandspeople site too). Expect him to be ldoging somewhere. Place of birth will probably just be "Ireland" but if you are very lucky it may say something more specific.
