James FERGUS, a coastguard, born 17 Mar 1801 in Westport, Co Mayo Ireland & died 1852 at Torcross, Devon, England. He married Mary (surname unknown) & daughter Mary was born c1821 at Belmullet Co. Mayo & married John BROWN, a coastguard born 9 Jul1809 in Castletownshend Co Cork, in Southampton Hampshire in 1839.

RC records for Westport begin in 1823 for baptisms and marriages with some missing marriage years between from May 1857.
There will be no civil records for James as he was born prior to 1864, the year in which registration of births began in Ireland. As I said in my previous reply, it might be a good idea to contact the National Archives - it would be interesting to find out what info, if any, they have on his Coast guard file.
It might be a good idea too, to keep an eye on the Early Birth and Marriage Index. It is updated regularly and if your ancestor doesn't appear now, they may in the future.
