Hi,

My second great-grandfather, Thomas Patrick Lenaghan, was born in Easkey, Sligo on Feb. 2, 1840 and died on Apr. 30, 1917 in Butte, Montana. I am looking for any information on his parents, James Lenaghan and/or Honorah Kelley; also information on his siblings.

Thanks,

Carolyn Toohey

Unfortunately, the RC parish records for Easky start in 1864 so there would be no baptismal records available for Leneghan/Lenahan children of James and Honorah. I also looked on the subscription site Roots Ireland for a marriage record in case the couple was married ina different parish with earlier records but no record came up.

The 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Easky civil parish https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/sligo/easky.htm  showed a Patrick and Thomas Lenahan in Rathlee townland. Likely James Leneghan and Honorah Kelly were also from Rathlee.

Going further back to the 1833 Tithe listings for Rathlee, there was a widow Lenaghan and a Thomas Leneaghan leasing four acres of land in Rathlee.

My guess is that Thomas was the son of the widow Mary and is the same person shown in the 1858 Griffiths. How he was related to James Lenaghan is the question, likely brothers or cousins.

I looked for death records for James and Honorah from 1864-1901 on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie but did not find a record for either. Did they remain in Ireland or emigrate? I guess it is also possible that they died pre-1864.

  • Hi Roger,

You are all over this board! Do you answer questions from every county? I have no knowledge of them emigrating. Thomas emigrated to the US in 1884. Yes, I have looked at that same free site with no luck as well.

In your opinion, is a subscription to Roots Ireland worth the money? I currently have a 6 month international subscription with Ancestry.....just curious if the Roots one provides more information than Ancestry.

    Thanks once again!

I think that Roots Ireland provides more records than Ancestry. My understanding is that Ancestry used the parish register information available on the National Library site. That information was microfilmed sometime in the 1950s. In the interim, additonal records were located by the local parishes and the Heritage Centers in various counties were given access and transcribed the records which were then accreted to the Roots Ireland data base. Roots Ireland dioes have some gaps in certain counties: No Co. Fermanagh church records. Only certain parishes are available for Co. Clare, Co. Wexford and south Co. Tipperary. For Co. Cork, only parishes for the Diocese of Cloyne are available. Parishes for the Diocese of Cork and Ross are not on Roots but can be found on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie. Same situation for Dublin city.

Roots Ireland allows you to mor easily search for records based on the parental info that you have.

  • Hi Roger,
Just to update on what I found since I last posted....I found Honora's parents: John Kennedy (1814) and Judy Jordan (1814); plus her three siblings: Frances Anna (1836-1900), James (1838), and Judy (1843). So I was happy to discover that! My search now has been to discover if she died in Ireland or in the US, and I am getting no where. Her husband, Thomas Patrick emigrated in 1885 to Montana, and in the 1900 US census, he is a widower. As I cannot find any emigration records for either of them nor a death record for Hanora in Ireland, I am stumped. My "best guess" is like her older sister, she came to the US too....Anyhow, on to more discovery!
    Thanks,
    Carolyn

  • Hi Roger,

I'm back working on these Lenaghan records, and have a question regarding the Tithe Applotment books. Why are there two dates, 1833 and 1842? Ancestry is only bringing up the 1842 date to attach to my tree, but I know that 1833 dates exist in the National Archives. I also noticed that in addition to widow Lenaghan and Thomas Lenaghan, there is a Mary Lenaghan for both dates in Rathlee.....would she be related to them? If so, how do you think?

    Thanks,

    Carolyn

When you click on 1833 and 1842 for Thomas Lenaghan, you get the exact same document. I presume this is the 1833 info. I don't why they have 1842 with the same info. Mary Lenaghan could be a relation to Thomas an his mother but no way to tell from this document.
