Looking for a birth location for my great grandfather James McKernan, son of Farrell McKernan and Alice Ford. Born around 1835 in Leitrim. James is my mother's maternal grandfather.

  • Hi Anne!

The majority of the RC parishes in Co. Leitrim have records that start later than 1835. So when I searched for any McKernan baptismal record with father Farrell and mother with surname Ford-- I got no record. This leads me to believe that James was baptized in a parish that does not have records back to 1835.

I did not see Farrell McKernan in either the Tithe records from the late 1820s/early 1830s or the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing. Any other clues that might be helpful? Any siblings to James who stayed in Ireland?

FYI. Although the surname McKernan is found in Co. Leitrim, the surname McTernan is much more common in the county.

  • Hi Anne,
The name "Farrell" is often a mistranscription of "Fergal." Also, McKernan can be Kearnan, Kernan, etc. Good luck.
