  • Hi Gerry,

I cannot trace James. There is no civil death cert for James before the family moved to Dundee attached to the Clugga, Cormeen Lower address in Moynalty where the family lived. Civil cert commence in Jan 1864. Maybe James died in 1863? There are civil birth certs for Edward in 1865 and Patrick 1871 and a civil death cert for Edward in 1868. See www.irishgenealogy.ie . The civil district is Kells for their BMD certs. Let me know if you cant find those certs. Spelling must be per the index. Have you found the baptisms on Moynalty parish register for Bridget 1861, Edward 1865, Patrick 1871 as well as James or would you like me to send them on ?

Only a fraction of deaths are recorded on church burial records. I don't see any entries on the moynalty church burial records for this family on www.rootsireland.ie .

Living in Clugga, Cormeen lower, Co Meath, they were one of the last houses in the north west of Moynalty parish. The two neighbouring townlands are Finternagh, Co Cavan which is in Killinkere parish and Aghnaclue, Co Cavan in Kilmainhamwood parishes.

Kilmainhamwood records commence in 1867. Killinkere has a gap and recommence in 1842.

There is a baptism in Killinkere parish on 21st June 1843 for Rose Mulvany , parents James Mulvany and Catherine Lynch, address Fartadreen . Thats only 2 townlands north of Cormeen. If Patrick and Catherine followed the normal naming pattern for sons ie the 1st after paternal grandfather, 2nd maternal grandfather, 3rd the father, this might be Patrick parents and sister. I dont think the Patrick baptism in 1837 in Lurgan parish, Virginia is your ancestors after further research. i'll post my reasons on the Virginia thread tomorrow as to how I came to that conclusion.

The normal naming pattern for daughters was 1st after maternal grandmother, 2nd after paternal grandmother, 3rd after the mother. I havent any ideas sofar where Catherine Carroll is from.

If your are on google earth or maps, search for Finternagh, Co Cavan rather than Cormeen, Co Meath. Cormeen is a common townland name in Ireland. I have copys of maps, but my android device isn't showing the option to attach them to this message for you. I'll get them to you yet. Clugga is only a local name for a part of Cormeen townland. Its not on any digital map online that I can see.

  • Hi Catherine,

Thank you so much for your reply. I must admit I have been struggling to find much about the family before they emigrated to Dundee. The reason I was looking in Virginia was as a result of my original enquiry to Cavan Genealogical Reserach Centre back in 1993. They told me that my great grandfather Patrick was the son of Bartholomew Mulvany and Joan Cahill living in Currakeel. In 2018 I visited the Centre again and met with Concepta McGovern, who told me that was incorrect. She did some research while we waited and came up with the chuch record of the baptism of John Mulvaney who was baptised on the 24/5/1868 in Kilmainhamwood RC church, son of Patrick Mulvaney and Catherine Carroll. This reset my search area from Virginia to Kilmainhamwood. Patrick and Catherine are shown as domiciled in Rolagh. We visited both places but found no trace of Mulvaneys. We did realise that Kilmainhamwood RC church had been rebuilt about 100 years ago and managed to find the original site up the hill and visited that as well.

I would love you to be able to send on the records for Bridget Edward and Patrick - I have one for James which I posted above, unless you have a better copy ? My email is gerry@themulvaneys.co.uk  if that is easier?

I have a feeling another visit to Moynalty will be on the cards this year !!

Many many thanks for your help.

    Warm regards

  • Hi Gerry,

I did abit more searching today. John Mulvany civil birth cert (civil district Bailieborough) gives Relaghbeg as the address. This is the next townland to Cormeen lower, which makes much more sense. As  a local it jumped out at me, but I can understand how Cavan got Rolagh out of the cert.  Anyway, they should have sent you to Tierworker church , the 2nd church in the kilmainhawwood parish.  Google maps spells it in irish as Teevurcher.

Clugga Bridge in Cormeen Lower, Co Meath , road ref  L7603 - https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.8697366,-6.9729882,3a,75y,261.61h,90t/da… . Does this link open up looking at a slurry tanker and tractor parked on a bridge with a cream 2 stories house beyond it. This is Clugga Bridge the border between counties Meath and Cavan. Turn around on the road and google drive back toward the R191 road (Bailieboro to Mullagh main road). There is a small gap not digitiesed, move the mouse on manually to skip the gap. Some where in this area Patrick and Catherine had their children Bridget, James, Edward, and Patrick.  When you arrive at the road  R191, turn right and travel to the next square cross roads and Smyth pub and continue on to the county boundary sign for Co Meath. This is Relaghbeg townland area and its in Co Cavan and Kilmainhamwood parish. They must have moved house as Patrick civil cert in 1871 says Cormeen .  The valuation office books in dublin will give the exact location of the house , if patrick was the rate payer (local property tax) . These records are not online. I'll be in Dublin next April if not earlier and hopefully remember to look for you. https://www.valoff.ie/en/archive-research/genealogy/ .

Tierworker church -  https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.8795998,-6.9274426,3a,75y,86.88t/data=!3… - I get the build date, but I think its built before 1868.  John was probably baptised in Tierworker.

Newcastle church - https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.8427179,-6.9328759,3a,75y,53.87h,84.44t/… , Newcastle is 2nd church in Moynalty parish where the other children were probably baptised. It was built 1840s on the site of an earlier church which was unroofed on 6th jan 1839, in a hurricane that swept across Ireland, known as "the night of the big wind". the inscription stone has 1844 on it. The bell town is newer maybe 1912 or 1915. The church front porch is newer , 1950s renovation, originally were 2 door entrances straight into the main body of the church on this gable end.  The hall is probably as old as the church.  Newcastle church is about 3 miles from Clugga . I'm originally came from near this church and live in Bailieborough town now.

Moynalty catholic church is about 8 miles from Clugga and was built in 1824.  link to church and parochial house - https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.7914807,-6.889653,3a,75y,270h,90.49t/dat… .

the present building  at Cormeen national school was built in 1912, and closed in 1968 as a school. Now a private house. There was an earlier school built on this site in 1836ish https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.8515456,-6.9454048,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m6!… . If mulvaneys got any schooling , its this one option or I believe there was a school in Finternagh, which would have been nearer to Clugga, but in Killinkere parish and the Kilmore catholic diocese. I 've never been down that road through Clugga, but Finternagh is straight on across Clugga Bridge. Some maps spell it Cloggagh .  Moynalty parish is in the Meath diocese.

If you make it back to this area this year, i'll show you around.

    Regards

    Catherine

  • Gerry,

Thank you for your e-mail address.  I'll e-mail all the irish civil and baptism certs by the end of this week .

The name on the children are the same names as all the other Mulvany/Mulvaney in Moynalty parish. the only names your family didnt have are Thomas, Peter, Mary and Ann!! . Owen is not a Mulvany name . Mulvanys are concentrated in the north west corner of Moynalty parish and originate from the Killeeter, Mullagh Mulvanys per oral family history, which is only across a river. Mulvanys tradionally buried in Kellys cemetery, Mullagh . That is the old mixed religious graveyard at the back of the present Church of Ireland building , towards the banks of Mullagh lake.   The only Mulvany headstone there, is the one belonging to my grandmothers Mulvanys. https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.8151414,-6.9640542,3a,75y,232.14h,70.1t/… .  If you are coming to the area, Killian Lodge Hotel, Main St,  Mullagh, Co Cavan is a good place to stay. The food is delicious too.

I found your family on the Scottish cenus of 1881 and 1891 on www.fmailysearch.org.

Bridget, James, John and Patrick are with their parents on the 1881 census plus scottish born children Owen and Mathew. Have you Mathew civil birth or baptism certs? They might give more exact information re Patrick and Catherine' marriage location in Cavan, than Owen's certs gave . https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KM6F-RGC

By 1891, Catherine is not on the census. Unfortunately, it does not give Patrick marital status, but she may have died. Have you any death records for Catherine?  What information do Scottish death records give ? I'm not familiar with scottish records. Patrick , Bridget, Owen and Mathew are on the 1891 scottish census. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KSNX-84M

I'll look around more tomorrow to see if I can get a lead on James, John and Patrick. Any possibility they join the army or police . Mathew is in the army on the 1901 Durham census. I do not have a subscription at the moment for www.findmypast.ie or www.ancestry.com to research army records. There were other Moynalty Mulvanys in the army (regiments based out of Scotland and England) and the Royal Navy.

  • Gerry,

Copy and paste the full internet links for google maps into your internet browser and hopefully they will open at the intended location in street view mode.

I think you will need to set yourself up as a user and be logged into www.familysearch.org to open the links in the 2nd post. If they do not work, do a search for them in the www.familysearch.org instead.

  • Hi Catherine,

Thank you so much - I defintely owe you a drink or dinner in Killain Lodge !

I can see the links in Google and do a "virtual" tour around - its an amazing feature - not the same as being there but pretty close.

We might well be over in May - we usually have a week in Connemara and we call in to see our Son and family in Belfast on the way, so we can divert through Moynalty.

I very much appreciate your help with this - I have got further in the last couple fo days than I have in years. You are filling in a lot of holes for me - I can trace us back to Dundee, but the time in Ireland is much more difficult - until now ! Thank you again.

  • I am looking for some Mulvaneys who are related to Thomas Mulvaney who left Ireland in about 1840-42, for Liverpool and ended up in Bolton Lancashire. My paternal Grandfather was Francis Mulvaney, born in Bolton in about 1880, died in 1952, in Morecambe, Lancashire. I believe he must have been Thomas' grandson. Was he any relation to James?
