Hello. I'm trying to find out if the James Stack born 1810, died 1870 in Mallow Workhouse is my ancestor. I think he may have been married to Johanna Connell. I also think he may have been the father of Mary Stack 1838. She's my great great grandmother. I know for certain she married in 1863 in Fermoy and have been able to trace her from that date. Her father's name is given as James Stack on her marriage record. I wonder if anyone has any connection to this potential family?

Many thanks.

    Hi,

I found the marriage of Mary Stack in Fermoy in 1863 and have attached that file. As you can see, both she and her husband were Church of Ireland. The Mary Stack who was born in 1838 was Catholic so i do not think the two are the same person. I think you will need to research the Protestant records around Fermoy. The records for protestants are held in the RCBL in Dublin.https://www.ireland.anglican.org/about/rcb-library/online-parish-records      Most of them are not online but they are slowly transcribing them.

I could not find Mary's birth or that of any of her children.

    Good luck with your search.

  • Thank you Geraldine. This is exactly the type of information I was hoping for.

On Ancestry there's someone that is a DNA match with me for James Stack and his son James Stack so I'm guessing the younger James is Mary's brother. Like me he has the older James Stack as being born in 1810 (we could both be wrong of course) and the younger one as being born in Dublin in 1835 - unlikely I would have thought.

Unfortunately, the person in question has chosen not to reply to either of my messages.

I have birth records of all of Mary's children - the eldest in Mallow, then others in West Meath. Unfortunately, several of her children died. My great grandmother Lydia was born in Malta. They eventually settled in Nottingham, England where her husband, George Garfoot was born (I think he must have been illegitimate as there is no birth record for him and there's no George Garfoot of the right age in thev1841 English census).

    Thanks again for the link,

    Lee

Hello Lee. I should apologise in advance if I am wasting your time on this one.

My wife's great great grandmother was Elizabeth Stark who died age 70 in Edinburgh in 1911 which makes her birth c1841. The record of her death names her parents as James Stark and Johan Ready. James' occupation was Army Shoemaker. I have had no joy finding any reference to James Stark and Johan Ready, but on Family Search I found a James Stack and Johan Ready (sometimes Reidy) who had a wheen of kids in Ireland in the 1860s and 70s. It is a bit of stretch to think Johan could have been having children from the early 1840s to mid 1870s but perhaps not impossible. What makes it more interesting is that in the1891 Census Elizabeth Stark is living at 1 Paterson's Court, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh, age 50, British Citizen born Malta.

There's a lot of conjecture in this but I thought there were enough coincidences to mention it to you. It might be nothing but it might be something.

    Regards

    Ritchie

  • Hi Ritchie. I'm happy to clutch at any straws. I've been searching and getting nowhere for such a long time. I'm up to my eyes with stuff at the moment, but will put your info into the melting pot and get back to you. Thank you.

    Hello again,

I was intrigued by Ritchie's message and checked to see if I could find the James Stack and Johann Ready to whom he refers. I found them but infortunately they were in County Kerry and Catholics so I do not think they are your family. I have posted one of the baptismal entries.

On the other hand I think the army shoemaker is likely to be in your family so I suggest you try to track him down in the UK records.

  • Hello Lee & Geraldine. I did a wee bit more digging last night myself and I think it best you don't waste any more time on this. It looks like I truly had set you on a wild goose chase. I managed to hack into the records of the 92nd Highland Regiment ( http://www.maltaramc.com/regmltgar/92nd.html ) while stationed in Malta. Among other things they list births, and, lo and behold, up popped (maybe that should be out popped) Elizabeth Stark born in 1840 to Pte James Stark and Judith Reddie. How Judith evolved into Johan will remain a mystery but I suspect I am on the right track. Thanks for your interest but sincere apologies for setting hares running unnecessarily. I suppose we all want Irish relatives these days, if only to get an EU passport.

The only positive that perhaps can be taken from this is Les's great grandmother Lydia may be lurking somewhere  in the Military records for Malta.

    Good hunting.

    Stay safe

  • Thanks Ritchie and good luck with your research.

I looked on your link for George Garfoot, but, alas, he wasn't there.
