  • Hi Julie,

    I have just discovered Irelandxo.

John Armstrong 1784-1854, who was married to Eleanor Clinton, is also my GGGG Grandfather.  So we are distant cousins!  I am a decendant of their son, John, who came to Australia in 1857. They settled on the South Coast of NSW, but made their way to the North Coast of NSW where they farmed at Nashua, outside Lismore.  John is buried in a small town called Clunes, near Lismore. Thank you for the information you have posted. You have confirmed for me that his father was Robert, married to Isabella.  What was Isabella's maiden name - do you know?

Do you know anything about Parkhill in County Fermanagh - where exactly it is and where the family lived?

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards

    Elizabeth

  • Hi Julie...I too am a descendant from Robert and Isabella via James "Bedad" Armstrong, John's brother

and he too travelled to Australia in 1839 on the Ship "Susan" settling in Kiama NSW.  Would dearly love to be

able research their family in Ireland and eventually back to the Border Reivers but not sure this will be possible.

Would love a research buddy :) Cheers Linda Pink

  • Hi Linda or Pinkie, greetings distant cousin,

Over the years I have acquired a couple of Armstrong researchers.  And now we have been friends for so long I forget who is looking for whom.

Do you have the article THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF "FOUNTAINDALE" JAMES ARMSTRONG by Paul Moffitt 1994 (Extract from Illawarra Ancestors and Relatives). Fountaindale junction along the Jamberoo Road is my favorite day trip.

I am up to my eyebrows in grandkids, God Bless them, so I find it difficult right now to respond fully.  Once the school hols are over by next week life will be more normal.

I am in Sydney.  My email is mjsg1@bigpond.com, looking forward to hearing from you again.

  • Hello Linda,

I'm a descendant of Robert and Isabella Armstrong - so we are definitely cousins!

It was through this page that I made contact with Julie Appleton - we have met and shared some Armstrong family history. We both live on the Northern Beaches, Sydney.

I have visited "Parkhill", County Fermanagh in Ireland and met the current "Robert Armstrong" who lives there.  There is a book called "The Steel Bonnets" by George Macdonald Fraser - it's all about the Scottish Border Reivers, and there is a whole chapter on the Armstrongs!  (they were a busy and dominant bunch!!)

If you'd like to contact me, please email - ejcapelin@gmail.com

    Where are you based...in Sydney?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Elizabeth Capelin (nee Armstrong)
