I am seeking assistance with the location of the Parish of my GG Grandfather, John Cleary. JC is believed to have been born about 1826/27 in County Clare. His parents are believed to have been Michael Cleary and Johanna Hickey. He migrated to Australia about 1853/4 and lived out his life in the state of Victoria. JC married Mary Maloney in Ballarat, Victoria in  June 1854. Both John and Mary were Catholic.

Any assistance or knowledge of John would be much appreciated.

  • Hi Graeme,

Birth records for Ireland did not start until January 1st 1864. Baptismal records vary and a check of  subscription site www.rootsireland.ie did not show any record.

Cleary and Hickey are two names that are in the Inch/Kimaley area. Close to the town of Ennis. Possible connection!.

You can check out the local County Clare library  www.clarelibrary.ie - Genealogy. It may give you some clue?

Land Records: www.askaboutirerland.ie Griffith's valuation - early 1850's and Tithe Records www.nationalarchives.ie  1823 - 1837  Both are free sites. You can see the Tithe records on Clare Library.

    Regards,

    McCoy

  • Graeme:

I looked on the subscription site FindMyPast and did not find a record for John Cleary. I did find a possible lead. I located an 1833 baptismal record for a James Cleary in Killaloe RC parish. Parents were Michael Cleary and Judy Hickey. Judy is a variant of Johanna.  No specific date in 1833 was shown. Here is a link to the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0793 You may want to scan the register for the record for James. Killaloe baptismal records start in May 1828.

  • Hi Roger, Thanks for your assistance (again). This birth looks very interesting and could possibly be a brother. Will follow up on the parish registers which I am well used to working through. Very best regards, Graeme Lee

  • McCoy and Roger, Apologies for the delay in responding to your posts of assistance. Following up the leads you both provided and with the help of the excellent Clare Library I have been able to nail the situation down. It appears that the Cleary's resided in the Bridgetown area of the Parish of O'Briensbridge. John's father Michael Cleary is listed in the Griffiths valuations in the townland of Ardataggle, which borders onto the village of Bridgetown. I have also located a baptism of a sister, Mary, born in 1829 and another brother, Michael, born in 1831, both with the family residence shown as Bridgetown.

Lots more to be done, but I also have to move on to the lady John Cleary married in Australia, Mary Maloney.

Thanks for your assistance. Kind regards Edenhope/Graeme
