After searching for years for my ggreat-grandfather John Crotty, I have been given a possible baptism record, on 6th February 1821 at Lisgoold, father Eugene and mother Joanna, and sponsors are James and Abigail Fitzgerald, I know the fathers name is Eugene from John's marriage certificate (John married Ellen Murphy in Newport, Monmouthshire in 1850) and this is the first time I have found a Eugene with a son John, so I am hoping this is my John. Can anyone tell me if Lisgoold could of been his birthplace or certain areas he could of come from?
Thank you for any help/advice.

  • Janny:

It would be difficult for us to confirm if the 1821 record is the correct for your gg grandfather John Crotty.

Do you know for sure if he was from Co. Cork?

Are you aware of any siblings to John? The subscription site Roots Irelansd has three siblings to the John Crotty from Lisgoold: Julian 1819 Johanna 1823 Elizabeth 1825

There are about ten RC parishes in Co. Cork where baptismal records start later than 1821 and it is possible your John Crotty was baptized in one of those parishes which means a record is not available.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Roger thank you for your reply.

It says on the 1891 census for Newport Monmouthshire that he was born in Cork, Ireland, all other cencuses for him just got Ireland?

I'm afraid I know little else Roger, just that he married Ellen Murphy in 1850 and they had 4 children. Johanna b 1852. Mary b 1855. Eugene b 1858 and John b 1860?
I don't know of any siblings to John?

Thank you again for your reply and for looking, I appreciate your help
