My John Mahoney came to Victoria Australia the long way. He was working in Boston in 1855 and married there in 1856. Between Aug 1857 and July 1859 John and his wife left for Australia. He always indicated on his documents that he came from Cork, Ireland. I have recently found a John Mahoney aged 22 arriving in Boston from Cobh, Ireland in 1852. Next to him on the passenger list is James Mahoney aged 24. I don't know if these young men are related, but it's not analphabetical list so they could be. John eventually called his third son James. John also seem to have affinity with horses. He was a "coachman" in Boston and a "groom" in Australia.

John Mahoney is such a common name and until now with only "Cork" to go on and no parents names it has been quite impossible to find his Irish roots. Finding Cobh on one of the few John Mahoneys arriving in Boston at the correct time and of the correct age has got my fingers crossed. Hoping there is some further information somewhere to confirm or deny.

  • Hi Marilyn

On www.rootsireland.ie/ there are 9 matches for John Mahoney born 1830

However there is only 1 match for James Mahony born 1828; I checked to see if the parish was Cobh but it wasn't. Similarly there is a James Mahony 1829 but the parish is not Cobh either.

Of course it depends in which month they arrived as to whether they had had a birthday that year or not so it could be the birth years are 1829 & 1827 in which case there are probably others!

Quite a few ships left from Cobh so it could be a red herring.

If you have an arrival month as well as year to calculate the birth years this will narrow it down to 1 James; you could then purchase the record to see if it had a parent's name on it; it would certainly have a parish. We could then see if we could get a John matching the father & parish from the 9 options

  • Hi Col. Thanks for the quick informative reply. I think I was being hopeful. Looking at the ancestry index again Cobh is the point of departure of the ship "Charlemagne", not necessarily where the passengers came from. So I am back to "John Mahoney from Cork".However your 9 entries sound promising as John seem to a quite particular sort of person and quite consistent with his age in all the papers I have looked at. Of course I'm also assuming he went direct to Boston rather than landed somewhere else and then  made his way there by 1855.

The ship "Charlemagne" arrived in Boston 12 May 1852 and James Mahoney was 25 not 24 yrs old I'm sorry.

Thanks so much for your comments.
