I am trying to find the civil marriage record for the marriage between John McCarthy and Mary Jane Garland abt 1880. I need to identify John's father to see how this family is connected to my McCarthy line.  I have checked irishgenealogy.ie but I cannot find the record even checking various spellings and years. I have the birth records for thier first four children born while they were living in Farsid (Mary Margret 1881, Thomas 1883, Norah 1886 and Andrew born 1889) I checked the catholic parish records in the NLI  for Aghada for 1878-1880 and did not see the marriage record (even though that would not provide the father's info I am looking for) but I did see Mary Jane Garland as a witness to another wedding abt 1877. The family moved to Cork City by 1890. The Garland name does not apear frequently in the records which I thought would help but I haven't had any luck. Can you provide any additional info to help me identify John McCarthy's parents.

    Welcome to IrelandXO,

I have checked Ancestry, Roots which are both subscription sites and could not find any marriage for either of them.

I looked up the Census to see if I could get an actual addres for them  -http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Cork_Urban_No__5/Buckingham_Place/1113626/

I have also put into a word.doc attached.

Good luck with your search and stay safe

     Hello NHutton,

I was asked by Jane Halloran of IrelandXO to have a look at your query.

I do not at this point in time know why but for some reason, the marriage of John & Mary Jane does not appear on the Civil Lists for anywhere in Ireland and not just Cork County

I have however found the births of another two children of the couple details of which I will attach. Christopher in 1899 and Anne in 1904.

I will continue to look and I will consult with a helpful friend in Civil Registration to see if we can come up with an answer. Did you get any indication that Mary Jane was from another County or that they were married in the UK or elsewhere and returned to Ireland after? If she was from another County, she may have been married there which has always been traditional for the bride to be married in her own Parish. If Mary Jane was 18 - 25 at marriage, she would have been young enough to have had Anne in 1904 and those figures give her a possible birth year of 1855 - 1868. I will also have a look at the national scene to see if I can find a suitable birth within those years although they go outside of the lower parameters of the Civil records.

  • I do have the 1901 and 1911 census for John and Mary Jane's family. According to the census, Mary Jane would have been born about 1862 (1901 census) or 1865 (1911 census). They had a total of 11 children, the first four born in Farsid the rest were born in Cork. If she was born in1865 then she would only have been 16 when her first child was born and probably 15 when they married, maybe this is why we cannnot find the record. Was there a minimum age for a legal marriage. I have seen the notation of minor on other marriage certificates, what ages would that include?
