John Owen Duffy emigrated to Bacup, England about 1859.  As they were considered English citizens, I can't find any passenger records.  I have a letter from his youngest son who says John Owen spoke about the family being tenant farmers on a large estate around Ballymote, Ireland.  He also mentions the ruins of a castle.  I assume this is Ballymote, County Sligo.  My great grandfather had dark hair and dark eyes.  That could confirm he was from the North of Ireland.  His marriage certificate in England says his fathers name was Luke. Any help would be so welcome.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The records for Emlaghfad/Kilmorgan/Ballymote RC parish have different start dates. Baptisms are not available until 1856 but fortunately marriages start in 1824. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and found an 1825 marriage record transcription between Luke Duffy and Mary Doohill. See below. Likely this Luke is the father of John Owen. I searched the 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Sligo and there were no Luke Duffy records. Possibly he was deceased or maybe he emigrated. More likely he was a labourer on the estate.

  • Thank you so much.  How do I get a copy of this record?  They had at least 5 sons. I found Luke, Michael and Owen in the English 1860 census near Bacup, England. I don't know when they left Ireland.  I assume Mary is deceased.  In the letter, mentioned above, my grand uncle says that one of the sons (unnamed) became a priest and ended up in New York. Is there a way to check seminary records in the area, between 1840 and 1860?
