From UK Census records I have traced my Great great great paternal grandparents, William & Mary Kelly (both born c1811) As far as I can ascertain they had 6 children, all born in Ireland, Owen (my great great grandfather) born c1833, Bridget born c1835, Patrick born c1839, William born c1841, Catherine born c1844 and Hugh born c1847. I presume the family left Ireland during the famine years as they first appear in the UK census records in 1851, having settled in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.

The 1861 census notes Owen as being from Balinasloe but the 1881 census shows him as being from Athlone? All other census records for the family just note them as being from 'Ireland'. I have searched for the family group on the IFHF recordswith no success, so by a process of elimination am assuming that they may well have come from Taghmaconnell or Moree parishes, by virtue of the fact that no birth records exist for these two parishes for the years the children were born.

Incidentall, William and Owen worked as Tanyard labourer and Stonemason respectively in the UK and I understand this area is linked to tanning and stone quarries?

Owen married Catherine Noon in the UK in 1858 and census records show her as being from 'Galway'. On their marriage certificate her father is shown as Michael Noon, deceased labourer, and I can't find any death record for him in UK records.

The family are Roman Catholic.

Can anybody help please?

Regards

  • Dear Matthew,

The name you are looking for is very popular in both parishes of Moore and Taughmaconnell. You are correct that there are no parish records from Moore Parish prior to 1872. The 1872 - 1900 parish records are available on www.rootsireland.ie but this is outside your dates.  Taughmaconnell parish records appear to exist from 1842.  I assume these are available on www.rootsireland.ie .  Both parishes are in County Roscommon.  Ballinasloe is very close by.

Sorry can't be of more help. Both parishes have history books published - Moore published in 1984 and Taughmaconnell in 2000 but I don't think they could shine any light on your research.

    Best of luck,

    Marie
