Hi there

My ancestors Nicholas KILDAHL and Elizabeth DUNN married at St Marks, Dublin in 1787. We think he later married Elizabeth LANE, and may have previously been married to another.

In 1820 Nicholas KILDAHL was a voter in the City of Dublin Election and was living in Baggot St. He was a carpenter, then he and his sons were House Agents. Not sure what Parish Baggot St was in? Can anyone help?

Their son, John KILDAHL was born in Blackrock, Dublin in 1796 - not sure which Parish this is in either.

John married Catherine Anne PARKE 15 Dec 1835 at St Thomas's Church, Dublin.

They travelled to Victoria, Australia in 1854, with Catherine's brother John PARKE.

John & Catherine KILDAHL's youngest child, Ida Octavia KILDAHL travelled to New Zealand in 1879.

There are still KILDAHL descendants in Australia and in New Zealand, also England, but none who we know of in Ireland.

The KILDAHL family - 2 brothers, James (Jens Nilson) and Nicholas (Nils Nilson), went to Ireland from Norway before 1770.

Many thanks

  • You've already done alot of work! Well done!

There were 5 Kildahl families in Ireland in the 19th century. You can view that statistic here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&UserID=

That website, if you are not already familiar with it, may have some other information of interest to you. Particularly if you use BROWSE for county/city Dublin.

For further assistance you might try

  • My great grandmother was Helen Kildahl.  Her father was a Norwegian sea captain, whose first name I don't know.

Apparently he came on a visit to Ireland, married, migrated to Australia and had eleven children - eight daughters and three sons. Two of the sons died early and the third son Lawrence had three daughters, so our side of the Kildahl name disappeared.

Their  daugher (my great grandmother) Helen married Ernest Minchin in Perth, Western Australia, and had my grandfather Hugh Minchin in 1884.

Any information on any Irish connection would be most appreciated.

  • Hi there

That makes us cousins - well third cousins anyway.

Your great grandmother, Helen, and my great grandmother Ida, were sisters. They were the 2 born in Australia after the family arrived from Ireland. The story about the sea captain has not been verified. My grandmother Helen B Mackay wrote many letters to her cousins in Australia as well as to Arne Kildal in Norway, and they could not find a sea captain to fit the bill.

Helen & Ida Kildahl's father was John KILDAHL, a solicitor in Dublin, Ireland and in Buninyong, Victoria, until his death in 1861.

John's father was Nicholas or Nils Kildahl, who was born in Norway in 1757. He and his brother James or Jens Kildahl went to Dublin, Ireland before 1770 - they were timber merchants. Another brother, Soren, is believed to have been the Professor of German at Trintiy College and  a Lutheran Pastor in Dublin in 1780s. They came from a farming background in Norway.

One of James descendants also went to Australia - Rev William Kildahl. He had 3 sons, 2 lived in Western Australia and the other in NSW. I believe there are at least 3 male Kildahl descendants living in Australia.

  • Hi I am a descendent of James and Hannah Kildahl. There are still quiet a few of us in Ireland but none with the Kildahl surname. James and Hannah King married in St Mark's Church Dublin on 26.1.1770 and had several children.

James came to Dublin as part of the timber trade with Norway in about 1760.

I have emailed with some more details  as I am not great on these sites.

This makes us 5th or 6th cousins. Nice to virtually meet you.
