I am looking for any descendants of the Thomas and Sarah Michael Kinney family that lived in the area of Gorteade/Tivaconway. Thomas and Sarah had two daughters, who never married, and one son, John Kinney (b. 24 March 1881 in Gorteade). John married Sarah Ellen Sloane in January 1908 at the Drimbolg Presbyterian Church. They had three children: Sarah Jane (b. 5 August 1908 in Tivaconway), Joseph (b. 15 December 1909 in Tivaconway), and Annie Mary (b. 21 August 1911 in Tivaconway). John died on 15 April 1912 from rubeola in Tivaconway. Four months after his death, on 12 August 1912, his son, William John, was born in Tivaconway.

Would anyone know if there are any descendants from John's children still living in the area? I would love to make contact with them. Thank you for any help that you might be able to offer. Are there any online sources that would allow me to track his children myself.

Here are 3 probate abstracts from the PRONI wills site:

Kinney William John otherwise John of Timaconway Upperlands county Londonderry of no occupation died 18 January 1937 Administration Londonderry 3 April to Sarah Kinney widow. Effects £43 6s. 8d.

Kinney, Jane otherwise Jeanie of Gorteade Upperlands county Londonderry spinster died 15 August 1962 Probate Londonderry 4 October to Joseph Kinney farmer. Effects £833 14s.

Kinney, Annie Mary of Timaconway Upperlands county Londonderry spinster died 15 August 1965 Administration Londonderry 5 October to Joseph Kinney farmer. Effects £2150 5s.

So it appears that Jane/Jeanie/Sarah Jane and Annie Mary both remained unmarried. William John married a Sarah. I have looked for a marriage for him in Northern Ireland but without success.

It also appears that Joseph was still farming in the townland in the 1960s. The above probate files are not on-line. They are kept in PRONI. They can be accessed there free if you go in person, or you can pay PRONI to copy the files for you (for a fee) though not right now as it remains closed due to Covid. You would expect those files to name some next of kin. William John & Annie Mary both died intestate (ie they left no will), so the one to go for first is  Jane/Jeanie as she did leave a will. However the other files should still show what surviving relatives each had.

Births of children within the past 100 years are not on-line. You have to go in person, or contact PRONI or GRONI (both in Belfast) to search for them when they re-open.

I searched for a death for Joseph Kinney. Death records are available on-line up to 1970. I could not find one for him so suspect he died after 1970. Likewise probate files post 1970 are not on-line. They are held in PRONI (in paper format) and you need to go there to search for them or get someone else to do it for you.

Griffiths Valuation indicates the Kenny farm was plots 20/21 (a total of about 60 acres) in Timaconway.  That’s on the modern Ballynian Rd, close to Buchanan’s farm shop.

It’s not our policy on IRO to give out details of living people. However from google searches I can see that there is still a Kinney living close by. Postcode BT46 5SZ covers the area.

  • Thanks for the confirmation on some of the research that I had done. I really appreciated the 1911 Census for John and Sarah Kinney. I hadn't realized that I didn't have that information yet. I most likely would not have thought to change the spelling.

I really want to thank you for the information about postcodes. A distant cousin was able to find this relative for me. It is so exciting to make these connections. I really appreciate your continued help and knowledge in making family discoveries.
