My gg grandmother  Catherine Leahy  b.abt.1831 emigrated to Victoria, Australia around  1849.She married  Patrick Griffin  from Kilnaboy, Co.Clare.

Her parents  were  Michael Leahy and Catherine Oliver.

She had a brother John that also came to Victoria.

They may have come from Ardcroney or Borrisokane.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Frank welcome IRO,
I can not see Catherine or John on the ship list I use, so I searched the Tithe records for her Father.
As you mentioned Cloughjordan and Ardcroney, I thought there is only one place to look.
    Cloughkeating.
    Here he was!
    I know this place.
Look at this link the Tithes.  Click on the record for Michael in Cloughkeating. As you go to the actual records you will see
Mrs Robinson, then John kennedy and so on.  John Kennedy is one of my relatives. As you go down the page you come to your Michael.
The next place is Derrinlee, this where John Kennedy's brother went to live years later.

Next is to Griffiths Valuation. when you open this, clink on the largest map view.  it says on a previous screen number 19. Click on the + 5 times, you will see the name Ballyrickard North,  to the left there is a small area of land in outlined in red with a number 5, thats where I lived. Look to the right and you will see a place called Woodlands, then Ballyrickard House, keep looking to the right and move the map as you go, you will see Cloughkeating Castle, thats where the Robinsons lived. They are number 2 then look upand left  you will see no. 4, then 2 again as it was part of their land and then number 19 this is where Michael lived.

From 19, go south and you come to Ardcroney.
Soory about all teh details......at least now you know where they were from

    Cheers

  • Thanks Margot & Jane.
    Any information is greatly appreciated.
John Leahy came to Victoria in 1852 I believe.
There may also be a sister called Elizabeth that married John Marlin and came to New South Wales in Nov 1852 on the ship "John Gray".
The ships arrival papers state that John Marlin is from Borrisokane & his parents were Thos & Bridget, both dead.
Elizabeth's parents are Michael and Catherine Leahy, father living.
    Hope this helps.
    Kind regards,
    Frank Griffin

  • Hi Frank:

Our local volunteer has found further information on your query and he has visited the parish office on your behalf.  Here is his reply:

The typed Cloughjordan parish records which includes the Ardcroney area showed that the was John MARTIN and not John MARLIN.I spoke to a man who is familiar with that locality i decided to check the original hand written records for Cloughjordan parish and i found that that the mans name was John MARLIN .The name was incorrectly transferred to the typed record as John MARTIN.

So the correct record is John MARLIN married Eliza Leahy on 5-2-1847 and the witnesses were John Leahy and Winifred Dwyer.
I hope that the above is of some assistance.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Thankyou Jane.

It's hard work finding records for my gg grandmother Catherine Mary Leahy, and even harder for her mother Catherine Oliver.
The only Oliver name I can find in Tipperary back then is a 'Silver Oliver'!
    Ah well.I'll keep on searching.
    Kind regards,
    Frank Griffin.
