Hello!  I'm curious to see if there is any information about a Ledger family living in Terryglass in the early and mid 1700s.

One of my sources for this is Burke's Peerage, which lists the marriage of Jane Minnitt (1721 to ?) to a T Ledger of Terryglass. Date of the marriage is unknown.

The Minnitt family lived at Annaghbeg House, Dromineer Parish, Nenagh.

I suspect that the son of Jane Minnitt and T Ledger lived in Limerick in the early 1800s after a career in the Army.

Thanks,

Michael

  • Thanks for this new information on Terryglass and nearby townlands!

The (Zachariah) Minnitt Ledger in Herbertstown in my 3rd great-grandfather, and I have a clear view of documents and descendents from him. His father, Zachariah Ledger, is, I suspect, the son of T Ledger and Jane Minnitt.

There are other Ledgers in Limerick, but I have not uncovered any apparent relationship between them (farmers and cabinet makers) and my line (booksellers). ZML, his son and grandson operated a bookstore in Limerick City - ZM Ledger and Sons - from about 1820 until at least the 1920s.

    Thanks again!

    Michael

  • Oh, the info about Tobart Ledger is is interesting! The dates may be in the right period.

Here's what limited information I have: Jane Minnitt was born around 1721, and married 3 times (this is info from Burke's Peerage):

    1st: Mr. Carr of Limerick

2nd: T. Ledger of Terryglass (Burke's has it misspelled as "Ferryglass")

    3rd: Isaac Jacques

My assumption is that the first two husbands died and she then remarried. If she first married around 1745, the subsequent marriages could be anytime after this. And she was likely capable of having children with T. Ledger until about 1765...  My ancestor Zachariah Ledger died in 1837 "at an advanced age" - if he was 75 at time of death, his birthdate would have been 1762. But he was already pensioned by the Royal Navy by 1816, so he may have been born earlier than this.

I know all this is conjecture and assumption from limited data.

So I am curious to learn more about the records relating to Tobert Ledger - what is the source?

    With thanks,

    Micahel
