Hello,

My ancestors seem to always leave their homelands before the 1800's.

The Caughell family was in Holland about 1730 when  GEORGE RUBEN CAUGHELL was born in Reusel de Mierden, Noord Brabant. He married there and brought his family to the Colony of New York about 1770. Sons were named Peter, George and John.

Sometimes it was spelled Coghill,Cockel, etc. I seem to remember from school that Irish Protestants may have gone to Holland for religious freedom.

I. How would one say this name in Ireland? Is it like Coyle? Is it 2 syllables? Thanks.

I would like to find a general location in Ireland where they may have come from, so I can come and visit. Therefore, I have been looking up names online by using C*gh*l in the surname box.

II. Some locations I have found in the 1600's and 1700's have been: (A.) 13 records in DUBLIN. Some at Church of Ireland [St. Audoen; St. Andrew; St. Catherine; St. Werburgh and St. Nicholas Within.] The earliest records were at St. NICHOLAS WITHIN. Also, St. Peter and St. Kevin in Dublin. A few were in Probate Records.

(B.) KILKENNY 3 records about deaths of CAHILL's  1780-1804 in Newtown, Irishtown, and Castleblunden.

(C.) QUEENS 1759  a male child born to Edmond Cahil and Mabel in Durrow.

Thank you for helping,

Sharon

  • Sharon,

The name Cahill is very common in Ireland and is found practically everywhere. In the 1901 census there were 6052 of them, almost all Roman Catholic. I couldn?t say that none ever went to Holland for reasons of religious freedom, but it doesn?t seem very likely. I haven?t heard of many people from Ireland going to Holland for that reason. (William of Orange did come from Holland to Ireland but that?s a different issue). I think the origins of the Cahill name in Ireland are likely to be different to that of your family in Holland.

Re pronunciation, in Ireland you would usually pronounce Cahill or Caghill as Ka-Hill. The "g" would be soft, almost silent.

  • Thank you, Elwyn.

My branch of the family has been pronouncing the name Ka-Hill as you said. Others have said Ka-ell, etc.

I noticed the Caghil families in Dublin in 1600-1770 were in the Church of Ireland. I may investigate further there.

Perhaps for my trip to Ireland I will visit Leinster and Ulster because I have 3 Ulster Scot families. The Caughell's seem to be my only Irish family.
