Dear researcher,

I am wondering if anyone maybe able to help me confirm a baptism at the Imogeela Parish of a Patrick Dineen.  He was born in 1841 and has 4 sisters who are confirmed as being Baptised at this Parish. They are Ann Dineen born 4 Nov 1838 to John Dineen and Honora Meade of Garrylaurence, baptised Parish Imogeela, sp1 John Griffin and Mary Dineen.  Ellen Dineen Baptised 04 Nov 1843, father John Dineen, mother Honora Meade, same details, sp1 Denis Dineen and MArgaret Dineen. Bridget Dineen baptised 01 April 1849 same details,sp 1 Michael Hennessy and MAry Keeffe. (Mary Dineen sponser at Ann Dineen's baptism may have married a Keeffe?).  And Elizabeth Dineen, baptised 19 Jun 1846, same details, father John Dineen, except mother has Mary Meade, address Garrylaurence and Parish also Imogeela. Sp 1 William Foley and Sp 2 John Colbert.

I have not been able to find any marriage records for John Dineen and Honora Meade.  They must have married before 1838. I have John Dinneen listed in the Tithe applotment books in Garrylaurence. 1833. As well as a Bartholomew Meade.  I wonder if this Bartholomew could be Honors Meades father?

The land they were on was owned by a Pierce Power who sold, and they must have had to move off the land sometime during 1850-60.  Ann and Bridget marry and are listed now as living in Cork City.  Patrick Dineen (our ancestor) travels on the Champion of the seas from Liverpool to Victoria Australia in 1863.  He travels with another man called Batholomew Dineen.  Which may be another sibling?? but have nor found anything on him either.

Hopeing that you maybe able to help me with any information on Patricks birth, or his father John Dineens parents and marriage?

Also, any information on the Sponsors listed, ie Denis Dineen.  As well as any inforamtion on any Maurice Dineen's connected with this family, as Maurice runs in the down line to Patrick Dineen and would love to know if he had an uncle Maurice? (John Dineen's brother Maurice?)

Kind regards

Kate Dinneen

  • HI Kate,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone is able to assist you.

According to the Irish TImes website, Catholic records for the parish of Imogeela began in 1833 so if Patrick was baptised there, there should be a record of it.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cork%20East&parish=Imogeela&churchid=59

It may be an idea to write to the local parish priest for some possible assistance. http://www.cloynediocese.ie/parishes/parish-details/?page=ddb_parish_details&parishID=27

Alternatively, you could contact the Mallow Heritage Centre as they have copie of the records, however a fee may apply:

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Emma, I will follow your advice. Since writing my post I have made a discovery that Patricks father John Dinneen may have been married twice. First to an Ann O'Keeffe, and this may in fact be Patricks mother.  I will look for Patrick with either mothers name as I am not certain yet.  Thank you so much. Kind regards

    Kate

  • Hi. I'm glad to have found Foley in County Cork. I have been trying to connect my ggrandmother's home of Drimoleague with my ggrandfather's home. Except I don't really know where that is. I just found the names of Timothy and Margaret Foley, both 16 years old. Their names are on headstones in the old St. John Cemetery. They died March 6, 1857. Their fathers' name was Patrick. They were born Castlemartyr, Parish Mogeela, County Cork. I'm hoping I can connect this area with my ggrandfather. His name was Patrick Foley and Her name was Honora Hayes. She was born 1850 in Drimoleague. I know that she sailed to New York in 1870 and married Patrick in 1871. I am thinking maybe they met on the ship or something like that. Thanks for any help you can give me, Nancy
