Hello,

I am looking for descendants of James, Catherin, Annie, Mary and Honor Madden - children of Bernard Madden and Rose Cole of Kilkenny West and later, Tasmania, Australia.  3rd Great Grandpa Bernard became a convict who was transported and received a restricted ticket of leave.

I am the third great granddaughter of the above mentioned people.  My descent is via their daughter Rose, who married Henry Ford in Tasmania, Australia.  Her daughter Katherine/Catherine/Kathleen Vivian/Avivian Ford became Mrs David Melville Fletcher.  Her son James Melville Fletcher was my maternal grandfather.  Bernard Madden was convicted of Sheeptheft and transported to Tasmania, where he received a conditional pardon, and his wife, Rose and three of the eight children left Ireland for Tasmania.

I believe that there is a parish census which may contain information on the family, but I do not know how I can receive a copy of the document.

I have found the names of all but one children and have confirmed them.  Their details are listed at myheritage.com and ancestry.com.  The children who did not immigrate to Tasmania with Rose Madden (Cole) were James, Catherine, Annie, Mary?, and Honor.  Are there any descendants of these five?

I have a comprehensive list on both Ancestry.com and Myheritage.com for the descendants of Rose (my second great grandmother) and 2nd Great Grand Uncles Peter and Daniel.

    Hi Joanne,

    Thank you for your message.

You do not mention any dates in your message, but as the transportation of convicted criminals in Ireland ended in 1853, I assume the census extract you mention is before or around this date and not th elater 1901/1911 census records.

It may be an idea to contact the Westmeath County Library Local Studies Department to see what records are available from the county. Here is a link to their contact page:

Alternatively you could contact the Family History Centre in Westmeath, however a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

  • The ship that 3rd Great Grandpa Bernard Madden was transported on was the convict ship Blenheim in 1851.

The ship that 3rd Great Grandma Rose Madden (Cole), Peter, Daniel and Rose (3x children) arrieved in Tasmania via Melbourne was the James Banes in October 1855.
