Hi,

My 4g grandfather was Andrew Hall, I have followed him through the census from 1841 to 1871 in Inch Wigtownshire. Andrew died aged 76 on the 1/1/1875 Inch. His age at death gives an approx birth year of 1798/9 but on census he is consist with his age which would give him a birth year of 1797/8 He states on all census that he was born in Ireland, his death certificate confirms his parents as William Hall and Mary Osborn (He does have a daughter called Mary Osborne Hall). He married Sarah Brawl (Broll, Browl, Broal) on the 6/1/1824 in Inch Wigtownshire. On the 1841 census Sarah says she was born in Ireland but all subsequent census she says Leswalt Wigtownshire.

Sarahs parents were John Broal (etc) and Janet Stewart, I have been unable to find a birth for Sarah (1796/97 going by census info) but have found one for her brother John (the only sibling I can find) who was born in Kirkcolm Wigtownshire 12/2/1800 to the 'Late' John Broal and Janet Stewart  Because I cannot find a birth for Sarah or death for John Broal Snr I don't even know if the were married but many years ago an older family member did say that he came from Ireland.....did he die in Ireland?

I don't hold out much hope for Sarah's side but would be delighted to find out more about the Halls/Osborn(e)s and where in Ireland they came from. They have been my brickwall for years!!!

Many thanks for reading this.

  • Hi

Inch, Wigtownshire is in SW Scotland not Ireland.  You may be better trying to find a genealogical site dealing with Scotland rather than Ireland.

  • Maria, I think Lostirish is trying to get help to find out if Andrew Hall was born in Ireland or not ?

Northern Ireland comes to mind as a lot of Scots from Wigtownshire moved there during the plantation of Ulster and after, unfortunately the church records do not go back that far in time  , civil registration only started in 1864 in Ireland.

The name Hall was and is common in the Counties Tyrone, Derry and Armagh

  • Hi Maria and Annemarie,

Thank you for the replies, yes I know Inch is in Scotland (where I live) but as Annemarie says I am looking for information as to where in Ireland Andrew was born. He was definately born in Ireland and I was hoping that someone could point me in the direction of perhaps where I could look for his parents marriage (William Hall and Mary Osborn(e) ), Andrews birth and any other siblings he may have had.

Going by the Counties you have given, it looks as if the family could have originated from what is now Northern Ireland. I guess I'll just have to keep on looking, if only Andrew had put a County on the census instead of just Ireland!!

Many thanks again to you both for taking the time to read and reply.
