Hi there!

I am looking for a Maurice Galvin born in Waterford, Ireland. I am pretty sure he was born 13 Apr 1831. I believe his parents names were Thomas Galvin (b. abt. 1800) and Mary Power. If it helps, I know they were Catholic due to Maurice writing his religion down in the census data of Canada in 1871 and 1881. As far as I know, he emigrated to North America in 1835 with 2 of his brothers, Patrick and John. Oddly, I don't think he came with any guardians/parents. I don't know what port of entry he came to North America from but he did work on the Grand Trunk Railway with his brothers at the Quebec/Vermont border. Later, he purcahsed land in Ascot, Sherbrooke, Quebec and was a tailor. He died 16 Feb 1901 in Sherbrooke, Quebec. I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me, I am really struggling to find any information on him.

  • Hello Grace, there is only one Maurice Gallavan (This is a variant of Galvin from McLysaghts surnames of Ireland) the father is Michael and the Mother is Catherine Cahill, the birth is in 1832 with baptism on the 18th April, the birth is returned as in Waterford and Tipperary, the parish on the register is in Tipperary but the diocese of Waterford, it was not unusual for the bishop to move townlands around the parishes to even out income etc

If this is your man I have more surprises as he is a twin of Richard, there are also siblings; Michael 1828; Catherine 1830; Bridget 1834, John 1838;  Catherine only comes back under Tipperary; you can see the parishes here https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1094

I could not locate a marriage which probably means the marriage took place in her parish which has not got records, also a lot of Catherine Cahills in the area.

Hope this is your man, you can search the registers by date and see the entry yourself

    Good Luck

    Pat
