Looking for information on Nora Jennings, born in 1890 in Ballyhaunis. She was the daughter of John and Mary (of James and Sarah Martin). She immigrated to the United States in about 1906 as a servant, and married Congressman George J. Bates in Salem, Massachusetts in 1911. I have been told that she was a bit of a local "celebrity" in Ballyhaunis because of her husband, but that could have just been family legend. I am looking for any information on her paternal or maternal side of the family. Thank you!

In 1901, the family lived in Ballynastockagh townland in Annagh civil parish. Norah was shown as 13 so she may have been born in 1887. Her mother's parents, the Martins were still alive in 1901 and living with them. I could not find the family in the 1911 census in Ballynastockagh so I need to do some more searching.

I found the 1911 census record and it appears that John Jennings was married twice and Mary Martin was actually Norah's stepmother. In 1911, John and Mary were living in a different townland in Annagh parish and James and Sarah Martin were deceased. Sarah died in early 1908 and James lived until early 1911 right before the census. If you look closely at the 1911 census, you will see that John and Mary were only married 14 years and Mary only had the four children which are the ones on the census report. if you go back to the 1901 census, you can see a 10 year gap between Norah and Patrick. Below are the civil death index records for James and Sarah. If you want to get the actual death records, let me know and I'll explain the process. I still have not found Norah's birth record.

I found this marriage index record from 1882. So my earlier conclusion was incorrect. Nora's parents were John and Mary Martin but Mary must have died after 1887 and John remarried another Mary. I will look for the later marriage record from around 1897.

I did not find an 1897 marriage record for a John Jennings in the Claremorris registration district but did find an 1896 marriage index record for a John Jennings and Mary McNicholas in 1896 in the Castlebar registration district. Not positive but there is a good chance that this is the correct record. I also checked out the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Annagh parish. I found a James Martin in Ballynastockagh townland ( see link below).

  • Caitlin, I Judy happened across your inquiry about my grandmother, Nora.  I have a copy of her birth certificate.  She was born October 31, 1887 in ballinastoka, her name registered as Nonny Jennings.  Father is john Jennings...mother is Mary Martin.  I wrote to: western health board, newantrim street, castle bar, county mayo, Ireland  to get the copy of her birth certificate.

she did live in salem, Massachusetts and married george j bates who was in politics here.
