Please help me find my ggggrandfather, Philip Byrne, a stonemason, born about 1780. He married Elizabeth Kennedy (in Ireland, I believe) who died in 1825 in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. He married Mary MacDonnell in 1826. One of their children, John Gervace Byrne, was the father of Charles Fenwick Byrne. Charles had several children, one of whom, Harry Fenwick Byrne, was the father of my Dad, Charles Joseph Leo Byrne. Philip Byrne died in St. John (or maybe Musquash), New Brunswick in 1868.

I am searching for information about his exact birthplace, his parents, his siblings, the date of his departure from Ireland. I would appreciate anything I could learn.

Thank you, Christine Byrne Fortin (the-cove@outlook.com)

  • Hello Christine,

As you may know civil registration started in Ireland in 1864.  Any records before this are church records.

Most Roman Catholic records only started in most parishes around 1820 or so. Some older parishes may go back to 1790 .   Protestant records were kept a bit earlier.

Anyway most church records online are between two sites. www.rootsireland.ie and www.irishgenealogy.ie.  I have searched both sites for your people but without  success.  Perhaps someone else can do better for you.

I doubt that you will be able to find any records for Philip and Elizabeth  here in Ireland.  You will have to trawl through the various passenger ship list sites that deal with Canada and surrounding terretories.

I'm so sorry that I can't be of more help, but Irish records don't go back as far as other countries.
