  • Les,

The marriage took place on 4.6.1859. You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate. Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church which should be on the certificate (unless it was a Registry Office marriage). That church may be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.

The certificate should also give you the couples townlands (addresses), occupations and their fathers’ names and occupations. If you post that information here, we’ll see if we can find a little more information for you.

  • Hi Elwyn I have sent for a copy of the marriage certificate. Many thanks for your help. I know the family moved to Liverpool and have lots of detail of their life there. I don’t know anything of their life in Ireland.  He sadly died in Liverpool workhouse. Regards

  • Hi  Elwyn, do you know where I might find a record of Robert and Jane departing for England?

  • Les,

There are no records for passengers from Ireland to England. Belfast to Liverpool was (and still is) a short domestic ferry journey. Records have never been kept for that sort of travel.

People from Ireland, living in Liverpool, used to go back and forth all the time for weddings, funerals etc. (Still do. I did it myself for many years). Your ancestors may well have re-visited their family in the Banbridge area. But the only way you can determine roughly when they left Ireland is by analyzing when they disappear from Irish records and when they show up in England eg in census records, children’s births etc. Are the family in the 1861 English census? If so, that suggests they moved soon after they married (which was fairly typical for many young couples).

By the way you don’t need to send for the marriage certificate. You can view it on-line immediately for £2.50 on the GRONI site.

Hi Elwyn, thanks again for your helpful comments. Their eldest son was born in  Ireland in 1861 and their second in 1864 in Liverpool. Presumably they came over between those dates which narrows it down.

    Regards Les

  • Hi Elwyn , I now have the marriage certificate for Robert and Jane. They both lived in  Garvaghy. He was a weaver. His father was John and a farmer. Janes father was David and he was a farmer. Regards Les
