May 16, 1844. ( I think near Limerick)  His wife was Catherine Fitzgerald born approx 1840.

Eugene's mother was Catherine Carroll.  ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT.  I am taking my boys this week to explore Ireland and will be in Galway, Dingle and Limerick.......ARRIVE thurs morning...

I know its last minute but the trip just came up. Thanks for any contrabutions....

  • Hi James

There is a record of the baptism of Eugene Madigan 1838 in Limerick on www.rootsireland.ie/

However when I searched with mother's name Catherine Carroll the match did not come up

You need to purchase credit to view the full record which MAY have the father's name on it

I went through all the parishes and found that the record was from Feenagh & Kilmeedy R C parish

Predictably, with a name as common as Catherine Fitzgerald there are a lot of matches - for births in Limerick 1840 + - 2 yeasr there are 33!

There was no record of the marriage of Eugene and Catherine Fitzgerald but there is 1 for Eugene Madigan and Catherine Carroll in 1835 so Eugene's father must have been Eugene also. The parish wasn't Feenagh & Kilmeedy this time.

On the Tithe Applotments 1823-37 which are free to search online there are 123 Madigans in Limerick but no Eugenes (I thought the name might have been handed down)

Similarly in Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 there are 179 Madigans in Limerick including 5 Eugenes - 4 in Croom and 1 in Ballangarry.

    Have a great trip!

  • Thanks Col,  I just found out through a ships manifest that Eugene is from Croom. So that

matches up. And Eugene was a Jr.  so the marriage in 1835 was correct.  Do you suggest going

to Croom or Downtown Limerick for more investigating?  Thanks so much for your help.  My boys

    are loving it.  James

  • Hi James

I'm not a Tipperary expert and you don't have time to post again to this iste so I suggest the Family History Centre Dooradoyle Road Limerick City though I notice opening hours are only 7 p m to 9 pm on Fridays!

I checked for burial records for Eugene Madigans and the only 1 was 1872 aged 78 so born 1794

    registered in Croom Civil Parish

I checked Croom graveyards and there are 2 St Marys and Ahnid but I couldn't find him in either

Maybe start in downtown - library might be helpful - and see if you can find a few Eugene tombstones

  • Col,  do have any reference to where the marriage took place between Eugene Madigan and Catherine

Carroll?  I have a reference now that Eugene Madigan jr. is from Macroom near Cork.

    Thanks again.  James
