My great grandfather Thomas Halligan came to the US in the 1860's, joined the Union army at 16 with his older brother John.  After the war Thomas settled in Troy, NY married Sarah Cecilia Ryan whose father Phillip Ryan and Thomas were "puddlers" at the Burton Iron Works.

I do not know from where in Ireland the Halligan's and Ryan's hailed from.

As you know Ryan is a very common name. Over half of the Ryan's were in Tipperary or Limerick but the name was found in every county.

Halligan was found mainly in Mayo, Louth, Armagh and  Kildare  but there were some Halligans in other counties.

I looked at Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie and they have 7 baptismal records for Thomas Halligan from 1844-1846. I picked those years based on your note. I did not look for the counties. You can work with the Roots indexes and adjust the years, however, without knowing his parents names, it will be difficult to pinpoint the record. Also, some churches do not have records going back to 1845 and are not in Roots.

Working with the indexes is free but you have to pay to see a transcription of a church record.
